Tractor Supply Co. is happy to sell products to local livestock farmers then stab them in the back by selling cheap meat from a shady fly-by-night in their parking lot. At least the cringeworthy AI graphic design of their flyer will make some suspicious.

Regarding the “SOB Act:” …the United States is prepared to dismantle a working system of public-health protection in the middle of an ongoing zoonotic crisis, in order to grant very large companies relief from a couple of state laws.

A single section of the 2026 Farm Bill could unravel a century of state laws built to keep American livestock free of disease – and the public free of the next pandemic.

This is the third of three articles I’ve produced on the language found in the current proposed Farm Bill called the “Save Our Bacon Act.“

No bacon is being saved. The law is using a dispute between the industrial pork industry and a couple states to overturn most state animal agriculture law. This is bad news for small farms and all the other businesses that work with them. It erodes the power of the Tenth Amendment. It favors Industrial agriculture. It weakens protections for small farms. It reduces consumer choice. It's a mess.

The Carver Center for Agriculture & Nutrition's op-eds and analyses papers fail to mention that its chairman, Andy Curliss, is also the vice president of strategic engagement for the National Pork Producers Council, which has been leading the meat industry’s push against state animal welfare laws.

If you want to protect small livestock farms, call your senator this week. If you support farm animal welfare, call your senator tomorrow. If you want to prevent federal overreach and nullification of state agriculture laws, this is your moment! Call your Senator today! Anyone concerned with protecting consumer choice, healthy foods, local agriculture, etc. should know that the “Save Our Bacon” Act would federalize animal agriculture law and is being considered this upcoming week in the Senate.
