Our farm and small but growing Dexter herd got a major addition with our new herd sire LTF ANT Harkin.

Harkin comes out of northern Indiana from a herd with quality genetics along with specific breeding goals.

Harkin is a big boy at only 20 months old. He will produce high quality calves on our farm for years to come.

Harkin is polled, A2A2, non carrier of chondro, non carrier of PHA, along with great muscling and conditioning.

Once the weather warms up and the snow melts he will get moved in with the rest of the herd. Exciting times!

Spring has certainly set in around here! Everything has greened up and the grass has taken off. Got the Dexter steers moved out onto grass and out of their winter pen about 2 weeks ago.

This is the first time we have managed our cattle on grass with an intense grazing plan. We trained them in their winter pen to the electric strands for 3/4 days or so, once we felt comfortable that they won’t test the fence we moved them into a portion of the property that doesn’t get much attention. This part of the property has no hard barrier fence, is very prone to flooding (have to keep a steady eye on the weather), and we don’t use it for hay.

So what better way to use it than to run the dexters over it and graze it down, all while fertilizing it at the same time. We find that every 4 days is the sweet spot to get them moved into a new section. They eat it down enough where they eat the grass 2/3 of the way down but not enough where they take it all the way down to the dirt. Every section in the electric fence is roughly 6,700 sq ft. That’s a lot a lot of grass to eat through in just a 4 day period!

Can’t get more grass-fed than this!

Little behind on posting but our dexter steers have made it home!
Yesterdays snowstorm finally brought on some downtime where I could break the camera out and snap a couple good photos of the new steers.❄️🐮
Happy to share the news that we primarily will be switching over to the dexters completely. We have raised Angus and Herefords along with the 1 highland cow to put beef on your table in the past, but we are going to transition into operating primarily only with the dexters.
We feel that on our property the dexters smaller frame will be beneficial to both themselves and the land. Only having roughly 15-20 acres of grazeable pasture the dexters smaller stature will allow us to keep our headcount around where we ideally want to be at without stripping too much off of the land.
Although we only picked up two steers, we are purchasing two bred dexters from the same farm. These ladies will join our farm sometime in late spring/early summer🤞🏽. This means that we will be more so of a small scale "full circle" operation instead of just raising 2-3 steers a time to put into the freezer.
For the next two and a half months or so these guys will be in their "winter pen" and fed a variety of different types of hay along with free choice mineral to maintain and improve their body condition. Once spring comes they will be transitioned out onto grass and be rotationally grazed.
Huge shoutout to Bird Cup Farm for allowing this all to happen along with all the necessary info provided in this process!

Sometimes I think the "townies" and "city folk" imagine farms as these picturesque little scenes out of a storybook—fields glowing in the sunset, animals frolicking in pristine pastures, and farmers leisurely plucking fresh veggies in spotless overalls. You know, the idyllic pictures you see online?

We do our best to hide the manure piles and the broken tools and toys but farming is DIRTY. Mud that swallows your boots whole, animals that, let’s just say, are NOT potty trained, and the endless, glorious chaos of nature doing its thing. Farming isn’t Instagram-perfect. It’s messy, smelly, and unapologetically brutal.

But here’s the thing—this is where your food comes from. REAL food starts dirty. Those pristine carrots you grab at the grocery store? They were pulled from the earth, dirt and all! That steak you ordered at your favorite restaurant? It started with an animal that needed care, feeding, and yes, cleaning up after. There's a good chance the butcher was hosing away poo with that blood..

And I get it—when you’re so far removed from the process, it’s easy to romanticize or, worse, not think about it at all. But this disconnect is why so many people don’t truly understand the value of food or the effort it takes to produce it.
