Today we said goodbye to the cow who started it all. Some goodbyes are heavier than others, and this one feels especially hard.
When Ally was 9, she decided she wanted to “try out” showing for the summer. It was never meant to be anything big — just something to try. But that small decision led to a newborn heifer and quietly set into motion a life no one could have imagined yet.
Ally was so excited to name her, and Bella fit her perfectly. Over time, that turned into even more nicknames like Tinker Bell and Leah Torpedo, each one a little reflection of her personality. She was the biggest baby in the barn and one of those cows everyone just loved.
Bella was Ally’s first heifer, her baby in every sense of the word. And before anyone realized it, she had become Doug’s baby, too. There was something special about the bond they shared — something you didn’t have to point out for people to notice.
Bella became Ally’s first Excellent cow and earned her first rosettes, trophies, and banners — milestones that felt huge in that moment. Even now, nothing compares to that first heifer or the pride that came with her.
She spent nearly 17 years with us and lived out her later days exactly how she deserved — retired, spoiled, comfortable, and loved. It’s hard to believe that one cow could lead to so much, but without ever knowing it, Bella became the starting point for everything that followed — more cows, the farm, and eventually Legacy Dairy.
The name Legacy carries two meanings for us — honoring Doug’s family’s history in the dairy industry, and honoring the legacy that began with Bella. So much of who Ally is, and everything that Legacy Dairy has become, traces back to one little heifer and a 9 year old girl.
Thank you for everything, sweet girl. You will always be part of our story.🥹🫶🏻
