We saved a few vet bills this week using a novel water additive (NWA) and/or a "sweet tea" (water mixed with a sweet feed type mixture). This is an interesting read of a study done on the products. All worthy of having in your arsenal against dehydration and colic!

In a recent study, researchers examined whether a novel water additive (NWA) could increase a horse’s voluntary water intake compared to plain tap water or "sweet tea" (water mixed with sweet feed).

They found that voluntary water intake increased by 50.8% for NWA compared to plain water and 47.6% for NWA compared to sweet tea.

Horses drank more than 12.5 gallons per day of the NWA water, and they remained consistently interested in it throughout the study period.

Historically, gastric impaction in horses has a poor outcome. Researchers at Utrecht University retrospectively reviewed cases of gastric impaction to evaluate whether treatment with cola was associated with improved survival.

Of the 125 cases included, 57.6% were discharged from the hospital. Horses treated with cola had a greater likelihood of survival: 82.8% vs. 35.8%. Non-Friesian horses treated with cola had 90% survival.
