We've been busy hatching! With the introduction of Quail as a new Market Project option for Youth participating in the Del Norte County Jr. Livestock Auction, we've been working in conjunction with Hawkins Homestead to ensure there are plenty of quail available for interested members of 4-H/FFA/Grange Youth to choose their quail pens from.
Why Quail?
*Small, compact birds, quail thrive in smaller environments, requiring a minimum of 1 sqft per 3 birds.
*Quail hatch in 18 days, are breeding and laying by 6-7 weeks old, and are ready for processing by 10 weeks old.
*Quail meat is all dark meat and incredibly dense and protein packed. Despite their small size, 1-2 quail is more than enough per person. They are not gamy and are great in soups or wrapped in bacon on the BBQ. They make excellent broth!
*Quail eggs have higher nutritional counts when compared to chicken eggs and are a healthy alternative to chicken eggs if you have allergies.
*Quail lay on an 18 hour timer, unlike chickens who lay every 24h, to make up for their small egg size.
*Quail are a great poultry alternative to other kinds of birds like turkeys, geese, and chickens, especially for those that don't have much of a backyard. A cage for a single covey of 10 birds (2 roos, 8 hens) takes up no more space than a push style lawnmower.
Whether you're a youth interested in a one of a kind Market Project, an adult who wants your kids to experience what it's like to raise and own livestock, or you just want to start your own journey to self sufficiency, check in with us to see if we can help you get started!
*Special Note - Heartwood Quailery hatches are booked until June 5th, and all birds are on reserve until the current youth in waiting have picked their pens. Anything remaining after June 5th and subsequent hatches will be available. Send a PM if you'd like to be put on our June waitlist. Thank you for understanding!
