No cow-calf producer in America is asking for increased imports. Undercutting American farmers and ranchers with products from foreign competitors does nothing to create market confidence or encourage rebuilding the herd.

For the second time in less than 12 months, the Trump Administration is intervening in markets in an attempt to artificially lower beef prices. Current retail prices are high because of strong consumer demand for the high-quality beef we produce.

Incentivizing additional foreign imports undermines America’s producers at a critical time as they make decisions about rebuilding numbers for next year. U.S. farmers and ranchers need stability. Unlike spur-of –the-moment trading decisions made based on White House social media posts, the decisions and investments ranchers make in their herds are made YEARS in advance, not days or weeks.

The Trump Administration's repeated whiplash on trade policy and beef imports has real impacts on cattle producers in rural America. USDA created and promoted a stronger “Product of the USA” label, only to abandon it and decide that MCOOL was the only option. Today’s announcement is not about helping producers. It’s not about putting their finger on the scale for one cattle industry group or another. It is 100% about the 74 days between now and the midterm elections.

Today, President Donald Trump announced the tariff-free import of 300,000 metric tons of foreign beef products. Below is a statement from ACA Chief Executive Officer Erin Beasley regarding this announcement:

"Today’s announcement by President Trump to import 300,000 metric tons of government-subsidized beef is extremely disappointing. This decision has consequences for our industry starting with the immediate reactions we have seen today in the live cattle market. Since the announcement, the market has taken a sharp decline, which affects the bottom line for cattlemen in Alabama."

She continued, "It’s no secret that August is a heavy marketing month for Alabama feeder calves, and volatility in the market greatly impacts the bottom line for our producers. Flooding the market with subsidized foreign beef only discourages cattlemen from making investments in their operations, ultimately slowing down herd rebuilding. We've already seen deals struck with poor trading partners, and now we will see an increase in the products we import from these countries. This Administration needs to focus on policies that will encourage herd expansion and lower the input costs that have burdened the industry for some time. Market manipulation will never be the answer, and today’s announcement is another slap in the face for cattlemen everywhere, especially the more than 10,000 members in our organization."

This isn’t political. This hurts the American rancher. Yes as a country we already import beef, but this doesn’t help the American rancher. Buy local. Seek out meats and produce from people you know. Support American Agriculture. You have a choice in what you buy. Everything is expensive right now, but why pick beef to manipulate that market. What will be next? Buy from us, someone else, doesn’t matter as long as you buy beef from someone who raises cattle in the USA 🇺🇸

NEW: President Trump announces a new push to lower ground beef prices for American families, saying he has secured a commitment for beef to be sold at 25% below current market prices:

"As everyone knows, under President Biden, beef prices soared at their fastest rate and the American beef herd fell to its smallest size in modern history."

"This deal will reduce prices for Americans while giving space for our Great American Beef Herd to grow again."
