Hirsch Vineyards

Hirsch Vineyards Family-owned vineyard and winery on the extreme Sonoma Coast, crafting site-specific and varietally-true estate pinot noirs and chardonnays.

Perched on a ridge overlooking the Pacific Ocean at Fort Ross, Hirsch Vineyards is the birth ground of great pinot noir on the extreme Sonoma Coast. David Hirsch founded the vineyard in 1980 to grow fruit and make site-specific wine. From the start all efforts have been on the growing of fruit that makes wines profoundly characteristic of the site vintage after vintage. The wines from Hirsch Viney

ards give the passionate drinker an experience of the clash of opposites meeting in Nature and Life: the edge of the continent washed by the sea; the eviternal grinding of the North American and Pacific plates along the San Andreas Fault; the wet winters and dry summers caused by the ocean and desert climates; the dripping rainforest and parched pastures; the contact and intermingling of cultures: Native American, Mexican, Russian, European; the change in rural economy from logging and ranching to winegrowing. In the wines of Hirsch Vineyards you find a natural balance and consistency in the harmonious resolution of these opposites. This complex, unique site produces fruit and wines of unusual acidity and balance with a vintage specific concentration of pinot noir or chardonnay fruit. These are wines to be enjoyed now or laid down for future consumption.

“Farming this vineyard is a headache, but when I drink the wine, I forget all my troubles.”

Wise words from our vineyard manager Everardo Robledo about our Chardonnay vineyard. This crazy steep vineyard is a tremendous challenge to farm, but it rewards us with a wine that is uniquely Hirsch and the only white wine that we produce.

Seeing plants grow and thrive is one of the greatest joys of a farmer. The vines are tremendously happy right now, reaching towards the sky and carrying out the photosynthesis that makes all wine possible. Years of biodynamic and ecological farming practices ensure that the soils are healthy, providing the necessary nutrients for all this green activity.

This iconic tree stands guard over the East Ridge of Hirsch VIneyard. Photographer Jak Wonderly perfectly captured the magic interplay of fog and sunlight that makes the West Sonoma Coast so special.

It’s been a wild first half of the year! Winemaker Jasmine Hirsch checks in on the East Ridge and Maritime Fields, where we are seeing very different impacts from the cold, foggy weather of June. East Ridge, which is more protected, has quite decent fruit set. But the Maritime Fields are showing the consequences of the intense coastal weather we had during bloom. Check out the video for more.

We'll admit it, we're soil nerds at Hirsch Vineyards! With the San Andreas Fault less than 2 miles from our vineyard, we farm a fearsome diversity of soil types. This keeps our jobs interesting, and allows us to craft highly distinct Pinot Noirs, all from our vineyard.

Visitors to our tasting room will experience this geographic diversity through the lens of our wines. And if you want to taste the rocks too, we won't stop you.

"Has the world finally reached peak rosé?" asks Bloomberg wine critic Elin McCoy. Since we're literally drinking a glass of rosé while we write this, you know where we stand.

Members, log in to access the Hirsch Rosé, which Elin describes as "rich, deep, serious and complex".

There's a magical interplay of sunshine and fog that happens on the West Sonoma Coast. This vineyard is in the section of our vineyard that we call the Maritime Fields, where the fog often rolls in and out multiple times a day.
