Here is a photo of my household food waste for half the month of January.
Did you know that in the United States, 21.4% of landfill waste is organic matter? Compostable material is a valuable agricultural resource. Placing it in our landfills is wasteful!
Myth: Citrus can not be placed in compost. It will kill beneficial worms and bugs. It also takes a really long time to break down.
Fact: Citrus can absolutely be part of your compost pile! And it can actually be beneficial. It is true that citrus peels can take a little longer to break down, but cutting them into small pieces will speed up the process. Only certain bacteria will eat the chemicals found in citrus peels, but they eventually break it down with the other organic matter. Some believe that since the chemicals in citrus are used in organic pesticides then they must be bad for a compost pile. However, these chemicals pose no threat to insects that visit your pile. These potent chemicals also break down rapidly so they evaporate way before the compost is added to your garden.
Save your fruits and veggies and start a compost pile. Properly cared for piles do not smell bad and its not as hard as you think! You are helping the planet when you properly dispose of your left over food. On top of that, you are saving money by not paying for compost to put in your garden!

We will also take your food scraps and add it to our pile. Just shoot me a message on Facebook. π
