Was I smart enough to bring my nice Canon camera with the plan to take some good photos of the girls? I sure was. Did I also manage to leave it in the hotel room on show day? I sure did. To be honest I'm not sure I would have had time to get many photos on show day anyway, but still. Bummed about that one.
We did snap some quick shots of the girls in milk that we brought before milking them out at least! And either way, the Uintah County Dairy Goat Show up in Vernal, UT was a great time.
Jessie and Bo Bo placed about as well as we expected them to against some very competitive 3-year-olds. They took 6th and 7th in both rings. Bo Bo didn't fill as well as we expected her to for show day, so she wasn't presenting at her very best, but the feedback from the judges was invaluable as always. Jessie was complimented on her front legs and her rear end angulation.
Moonshine took 3rd out of four in the yearling FF group in both rings, again against some very nice FF girls. She was heavily complimented on how dairy she is and for her overall mammary system. Her capacity and attachments especially.
Ember took 3rd in the first ring and 4th in the second, in a group of seven total Jan-Feb kids. Both judges highlighted her overall substance and all around width, as well as her front end strength, chest depth, and level topline. We were very proud of her, even though she treated the ring like it was tryouts for the circus 😅
And our new addition(who we will officially announce shortly 😉) took 4th in both rings out of seven total April kids. Justin in particular emphasized that this age group was the strongest he had seen for the day! She was complimented on her long body, well-defined front end assembly, and her levelness from hips to pins.
We loved getting to see some of the herds we met at our first show, as well as meeting a couple new herds. A huge thank you to the judges, Justin Bennett and Dan Laney, who gave us awesome feedback on our girls and even some pointers on setting up our goats in the ring. And obviously thank you, thank you to everyone who organized the show and made sure it ran smoothly. I know it's a TON of work behind the scenes, and it is deeply appreciated.
There is still so much for us to learn, and we always walk away from these shows feeling more confident in what we're doing and the direction we want to go with our new little herd. We're figuring things out, for sure!
