PEONY SEASON IS HERE!! …well, sort of.
Frustrated, disappointed, and a little heartbroken just scratches the surface of how we’re feeling about this year’s peony crop. Going into year four, we were expecting our biggest harvest yet. Unfortunately, our harsh spring and all of the late-season frosts hit our peony field hard, and we lost close to 85% of our blooms. Talk about a HUGE blow.
That’s the reality of farming sometimes, and while it’s incredibly discouraging, it’s also teaching us how to better prepare moving forward. One thing we didn’t fully consider when planning our peony field was its location at the bottom of a large farm field. Frost settles in low areas and, lo and behold, that’s exactly where our peonies are planted.
This fall, hopefully, we’ll be moving part of the field and adding a windbreak to help protect future crops. It’s hard feeling like you take four steps forward and two steps back, but that’s farming.
Because of the major losses this season, we’ll only be able to fulfill our spring and peony subscriptions, along with a few private events already booked. Any extra blooms we do have available will be offered to our email subscribers first.
If you made it this far, thank you so much for supporting our little flower farm through the highs and lows. Here’s to hoping for a much better flower season ahead. 🤍
Check the video to see how crazy frost can be, it’ll affect an entire plant and not touch the plant directly next to it 🤷♀️
