This season is going to look a bit different for us.

It's no secret that the water situation is dire with limited ditch irrigation water and now the earliest introduction of pricey domestic water drought rates that we've had in our time in the Surface Creek Valley. We are listening to these cues that Mother Nature is giving us and scaling back.

Last week, farmers were thrown another curveball. With the record heat of March, perennial crops were several weeks ahead of normal, then a deep, hard freeze set in zapping many crops. We are grateful that damage and loss on our farm was minimal, and following the freeze we transplanted out our hardy annual flowers and brassicas. Ironically, this transplant was a week to 10 days later than what is normal on our farm, but they were unscathed by the frigid temps.

Farming offers us a remarkable way of life that connects us to the seasons, forces us to adapt to change, and keeps us grounded in the moment—all making us more resilient for the journey ahead.
