We’re a little late on the post but it’s national dog day! We love our livestock guardian Honey!
Always on duty and never complains with a smile on her face! She is a great companion and protector for us and our stock and has become family.
Good job Honey dog!🐕

Our herd sire EGW Earle Byrd. He’s 18 months, and has just had his first hoof trim. Not from neglect but he simply hasn’t needed one! Additionally hasn’t been wormed and his FAMACHA hasn’t indicated that he needed it.

When looking for herd sires confirmation is important but also things like hoof health and worm resistance should be at the top of the list.

Our livestock guardian Honey! 🐕
Honey is an Anatolian Shepherd that is our security detail.

Anatolian shepherds are one of the oldest dog breeds and were bred to be independent thinkers that did not need to be given orders to do their jobs. Anatolians are considered a giant breed and range from 100-150+ pounds.

Despite their name they are not herders. They do however form deep bonds with their owners and their livestock.

Unlike other dogs they don’t care for fetch or playing. They however have a fierce sense of protection over their animals and their humans.

Some people say ‘why not Pyrenees?’

We prefer Anatolians to Pyrenees for their personality but also as a maintenance bonus. Anatolians do not have long hair that forms mats or hotspots.

So, I want to discuss a condition that goats can get that a lot of people have either never dealt with or never heard of.

Meningeal worms.

If you have deer coming through your pasture or have moved your stock, they're a risk.

Whitetail deer transmit the roundworm in their f***s, which snails and slugs then ingest. Then, a goat accidentally eats them while grazing, and 30-60 days later, symptom onset occurs.

The onset of symptoms can seem like polio, but weakness often starts in the hind end, with dragging a leg or a toe scraping the ground. Then it progresses into spinning and hind end weakness and potentially going down, and sometimes intense itching, mainly neurological symptoms.

The good thing about this is that it is NOT transmissible to other stock. Goats are a dead end host to the worms. The bad thing is that they're detrimental and can cause lasting deficits if not caught early. It is treatable but requires a lot of wormer:

5 days of Safeguard at 10 times the listed dose, which crosses the blood-brain barrier to kill the worms initially, followed by 3 days of ivermectin to kill off any remaining worms, and Banamine or dexamethasone to reduce inflammation in the spinal cord.

I have included a video of my doe to show how subtle the onset can be. We are currently treating her and hoping to have no deficits.

Food for thought. Breed for resistance not constant worming. Several of mine are 2+ and have not been wormed once.

Food for thought. Breed for resistance not constant worming. Several of mine are 2+ and have not been wormed once.

Imagine this.

You're checking your goats and one looks a little "wormy."

No problem.

You grab your trusted bottle of dewormer and treat her.

A week later, she's starting to develop bottle jaw.

You reach for the bottle again, convinced she just needed another treatment.

Another week goes by...
..and she's worse.

That story is becoming more common as parasites develop resistance to the dewormers we've depended on for years.

That's why we believe the long-term answer isn't simply finding a stronger chemical.

It's breeding stronger goats.

Every generation, we select the goats that stay healthy, thrive under parasite pressure, and require little or no deworming.

Because when the dewormers become less reliable, genetics don't suddenly quit working.

The future belongs to the resistant.
