There is a side of farming that rarely gets talked about. When the pigs and cattle leave for the butcher, the farm gets quiet.

Not just because there are fewer mouths to feed or chores to do, but because the routines you’ve built around those animals suddenly disappear. The feed buckets stay hanging a little longer. The gates don’t need opened. The familiar sounds that filled the barn each morning and evening are simply gone.

As livestock producers, we know this day is coming from the moment they’re born or arrive on the farm. We raise them with purpose. We feed them, care for them, and make sure they have the best life we can provide. We understand the role they play in feeding families, and we’re proud of that. But that doesn’t mean it’s easy.

You still notice the empty pen. You still catch yourself looking toward the pasture out of habit. You still feel the silence.

It’s the side of farming people don’t often see. The side where gratitude and sadness exist together. The side where hard work ends with a quiet reminder of why we do what we do.

The chores will continue, new animals will fill the barns, and the cycle will begin again.

But today… the farm is a little quieter.
