Moms Food Diary

A handful of leftover popcorn
cold from last night,
Abandoned crunchy whispers
of last nights family movie.
Only white pieces remain,
because Finnley always picks out the best ones.

Two bites of waffle
also cold,
left in a tiny puddle
of real maple syrup
drizzled with love.
(No corn syrup here.)
Willa sucks on her first waffle too
half of it, toasted crunchy,
slathered in butter.
She’s a total mess,
and I love it.

Their syrupy sweetness
makes me smile
as I finally reach for my coffee
reheated twice
and still somehow cold.
No sugar, just milk,
because I forgot the cream.
But who needs sugar
when life is already sweet?

A quick snapshot
Just a glimpse
crumbs and baby smiles,
Mom’s empty stomach
and full heart.
Don’t worry…
it’s only breakfast.
