Guess what’s in the box?!?!?
It’s the biggest most beautiful rooster we have ever had! We decided it was a good time to get a single male since we no longer have visitors on the farm. We believe that for a rooster to really thrive in a flock there needs to be a minimum of 14 hens to 1 rooster. We always get call asking if we can take in an unruly rooster that someone purchased from the feed store and has become aggressive or just too loud for the neighbors. We DO NOT/WILL NOT be taking any in, we have our ratio down just perfect right now. But here are some tips. If you bought it from the feed store and it was supposed to be “sexed” as a hen the feed store will sometimes take it back. If you bought it as a mystery you are out of luck. But, you can always look up how to make ‘coq au vin’ 😜

Our small family flock is thriving! Almost a 100% laying rate, and the insides are beautiful 💕

EDIT: we are still not open to or selling to the public. We are operating at a size big enough for family production. But plan to share our lives as we homestead and continue to live off the land. Farming has always been important to us and I hope that by sharing our personal experience that we can motivate someone to start their own little journey!

A Farewell letter:
To our friends, customers, and farm family.

We want to thank you for your patronage and support over these past seven years. We have had the amazing experience of watching the North Texas sustainable food movement blossom and have enjoyed being even a small part of that.

Unfortunately, as many in the food economy, we never really recovered from the impact of Covid. When government mandates required the closure of restaurants we lost much of our customer base overnight, literally. Even with the greatest support of organizations like The Seed Project Foundation, some amazing chefs, and fellow farmers, we simply could not keep our head above water.

We are sad to announce we are closing the gates to Cartermere Farms. The experiences we have had, and the relationships we have built will forever be etched into our minds. Above all, thank you to our customers, volunteers, and past employees/interns. You have no idea how much you have individually and collectively meant to us. Helping us build a dream into reality, and for that we are grateful. While we have sold our last eggs as a business, we plan to continue to farm as a family. Although we are sad for this chapter in our lives to close there is also much excitement for what our future will be.

We hope that you will continue to support other local makers, growers, and farmers. Please visit our website for a list of other farms we love!

Thank you again and best wishes to you and your loved ones.

Fun foraging find.....see those patches of dark green? Those are wild onions! Sometimes we pick them for restaurants, and sometimes we just eat them. And sometimes we just enjoy the savory scent while fishing on the bridge.
