Had a Mama and her baby delivered Saturday!!!!
Braydon wants to name them Bee fJerky (the f isn’t silent) and Terri Ahki. 🤣🤣 Names haven’t been decided yet.... Also trying to get them some shelter built, thank you for helping me on your break Tanner!!! Still waiting on them to warm up to us, but I think they have separation from their herd anxiety. Finally got to pet the mama Sunday night and the calf tonight though, cubes are the key. We’ll get there!! Christy McElroy

So the farming progress was forcibly put on hold this week...we had a very unexpected winter storm. No snow, but everything else from freezing rain that knocked our power out, to thunder and lightning while it was sleeting, to heavy rain and high winds. Had to clean up and move limbs every time I had to go get generator fuel or go to work for four days just to be able to get out. Had to park and walk up and get the tractor and do it again every time I got home all four of those days also, just to make the last 100 yard push up the driveway. The quickest I did it was about 45 minutes on Monday (day 1) evening. We left to get fuel for the generator and came back and limbs were already down. Every other time, it was between an hour and a half and two hours of cleanup. We may be without power for a while. There are poles down and lines laying for miles around here. This started on the 26th, and I feel fortunate that I finally saw a crew in our area last night. Still about 5 miles away, but they’re close. Prayers for these dedicated hard working people out rebuilding infrastructure and restoring power. Prayers for those less fortunate that don’t have a generator to run on. We’ve been checking on and doing what we can for neighbors. We’ve had our generator going since Monday at 2, long enough to figure up fuel usage. We are averaging about .75gal/hr of fuel usage, and that’s living very conservatively. Monday at 2 thru today at 7, that’s 113 hours on the generator and roughly 85 gallons of gas filled out of 5 gallon cans. I just got back from getting another 75 gallons, I’ve adapted and made other means of storing so I don’t have to go so much. That was a lot of trips to the store to fill cans, and unloading and carrying the cans. I’m very grateful to be able, but it’s getting tiresome. Christy has been helping fill the generator and doing everything she can to make it easy on me when I get home. She and Logan have been cleaning up limbs with the hopes I could have driven right in, but the cleanup never seemed to last very long. Limbs braking under the weight of all the ice constantly. I believe the reality of it is our leaves hadn’t had a chance to fall off yet, so that offered a whole lot more real estate for the freezing rain to build up on and that is a tremendous amount of weight at that point. We will be cleaning up for months, but that’s alright, we’re all safe and staying warm, and at least we can!!! On a positive note, they’ve been out of school all week because of the same weather/power outages, so she’s had time to play and we’ve eaten good!!! The highlight for me, she made some Banana bread and it was the best ever!!!! We’ve got some good videos we’ll be editing and uploading in the near future. Stay tuned!!

So this happened today!!! Patience has paid off!!! 95 f-250 with 213,000 miles and a 460 in it. I was shopping for a 7.3 diesel because of the pulling it will be doing, but after seeing the condition of this beast, all I worried about was being too late to buy it. Fortunately, the only other one that looked at it tried lowballing the owner leaving the door open for me after he was asked to leave. Runs perfect, interior is perfect, and only 3 small dings that are very hard to find. . 4 wheel drive and all!!! I do believe she’ll have a good life on this Ford loving farm!!

Yesterday, got Logan on the roof to help me pop some lines so we could finish screwing the sheets down. Braydon and Tanner you would’ve been proud of this guy! Finally comfortable with the heights, not a worry one! So we got it all finished up except.... corner trim. Going to have to brake a lot more metal, but I’m tired of it right now and the equipment is, and maintenance can be done, in the dry. Braking is so taxing! There have been a few days I woke up and thought I was going to need Christy to scratch my back because my shoulders were mad at me.

With the barn project behind us (for the time being), I’ll spend the next few hours/days cleaning up and organizing all of these tools that scattered themselves everywhere.... Be back to fence building and brush clearing in no time!

Plans changed at work last Tuesday, Sept. 29th, so my awesome boss allowed me to take a vaca day extending my 4 day weekend and work on the barn since all was well there. This was Day number 2 of my re-dedication to working on the barn. Obviously there were a lot more days involved, before the these two, but hadn’t worked on it in a while, so finally set aside the time to working towards getting this finished up. Yes it’s a week late, but just able to get it posted! Loving this life, however I was more than ready to go back to my 9-5 after this busy 5 day weekend.

Beautiful day! Finally decided how to finish the front of the barn. Hard work alone, because everyone is working somewhere else today, but worth it in the end. Concrete floor to come on the right side eventually, but will give me somewhere to store and maintain equipment. Ready to call this project wrapped for a while. A few more days with progress like this and I’ll be able!!!

This summer our garden kept us really busy! I canned a lot of salsa & pickles! I did pickles for the first time, and they are so good! I tried different recipes and it turns out the easiest one is actually our favorite! We’ve had plenty of tomatoes! We have enjoyed frying green tomatoes!😋 We also love frying our spicy pickles!😋
