A cool spring so far, and I need it to be a little drier to get some bigger plantings in, but enjoying the peace of the smaller early greens and onions planting on a little farm walk last night.

What’s ready to plant now? Greens, peas and alliums! What should wait? Tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, melons, beans, eggplant and peppers - we need our soil temps to be a weeee bit higher.

This is my 2 am view this morning, moving 1500 tomato plants back into a heated space to protect them from freezing.

These are our farm tomatoes, scheduled to be planted in our unheated high tunnels this week, but delayed due to a few nighttime lows that made me a little nervous. They are currently hardening off (Getting used to outside temperatures and conditions) in our unheated low tunnel.

Sure enough, a predicted low of 37 ended up going down to 30 last night, and I spent an hour with a headlamp and the dogs moving plays back into a heated greenhouse for the remainder of the night.

Can’t wait until these monsters are planted and the nights are reliably mild!

Hardening off the farm tomatoes for planting in the hoophouses sometime in the next week. Always feels like a risky venture, but worth it to get the tomatoes a liiiiiiitle earlier. Can’t wait for that first tomato sandwich 🍅🥪

It’s onion planting season! Time for a repost of this video from 2024 🧅

It’s still too cold for many of our garden favorites, like tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, and many of the annual flowers. However, early May is a great time to plant hardy greens like spinach, lettuce, kale, chard, arugula, broccoli, cabbage, and others. And it’s an especially great time to plant your onions! Onions can be one of the first things in the ground every year, as they are cold hardy and slow growing. Hope this video is helpful for your onion success!
