BEHIND THE SCENES TODAY AT Country Roads Meat Market .
If you own a meat locker you will inevitably one day have a drain that gets backed up! And you know.... it is OF COURSE going to happen when you are trying to get everything done and ready to go on vacation!

YEP! You know there is trouble when Jacob (1 of our faithful and reliable cleaning crew members) comes to my office and has a very disturbing look on his face. Then, he says, "Melanie, we have a BIG problem!"

My reaction, "What now?"

"The drain under the cut table will not go down, water is everywhere!"

And so the fun began! With some direction from Mike over the phone (because he was not here), and with Zaylie and Caitlyn standing back and covering their noses, Jacob and I worked together to get the drain cover off (which was not easy with deep water over it), while we asked Zaylie and Caitlyn to google search out a video on how to use the snake (don't laugh, how many of you ladies have ever used one?).

And once we ran the snake down and stuck our hands and arms down the drain to pull out some NASTY, STINKY stuff, we had it fixed! All in about 40 minutes!

You gotta know Jacob, (a great kid by the way), who is ALWAYS asking people around here if they would do things like lick a cow tongue for $5 bucks or eat raw liver for $10 bucks, or if you could live inside any movie scene what would it be... all in fun because he is just that way, Looks at me and immediately says, "Melanie, I'll give you $5 bucks if you eat what we just pulled out of the drain!".

If only the camera was running then. Of course my answer was a quick "No".

Sometimes we have to look on the bright side of things, I'm just thankful it happened while we were here and NOT when we are gone on Saturday when our crew will be here running the show without us. And Thankful for the crew we have working for us. We couldn't make it without them

U.S. CATTLE REPORT 🔔 DOJ Expands Beef Price Investigation to Major U.S. Retailers

According to Fox Business, the Department of Justice Antitrust Division has expanded its investigation into beef affordability to include eight of the nation’s largest grocery retailers: Walmart, Costco, Amazon, Kroger, Publix, Albertsons, Aldi and Ahold Delhaize. Associate Attorney General Stanley E. Woodward Jr. sent letters to the companies regarding recent increases in retail beef prices, extending federal scrutiny from the meatpacking sector to the retail level of the beef supply chain.

The expansion follows the DOJ’s May antitrust investigation into the “Big Four” meatpackers — JBS, Cargill, Tyson Foods and National Beef — which the department says control more than 85% of U.S. beef processing. According to Fox Business, federal officials are examining whether industry concentration has contributed to higher beef prices. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins has also connected concerns over beef affordability with tightening domestic cattle supplies, noting the U.S. cattle and calf inventory stood at approximately 86.2 million head on January 1, the lowest level since the 1950s.

We are Open from 8 to 5 Thursday and Friday and 9 to 1 on Saturday.

Dont forget, we are Closed Sept 6th - Sept 13th for vacation!! We will re-open on September 14th at 8AM.

Nope, this Minute steak was NOT cut into a heart shape! This was how it turned out after tenderizing it!

Dont forget, we will be OPEN Thursday & Friday from 8 to 5. Saturday, the 5th from 9 to 1. BUT.... we will be closed the 6th thru the 13th for vacation! So, you have 3 more days to stock up before vacation time hits!!!

If you have received a text telling you your processing is finished, please try to pick it up before we leave for vacation. We would like to have very little left in the freezernover vacation!

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig invites school food programs to apply now for the Choose Iowa Local Food for Schools Program. The program started as a pilot project in 2025 and funding for the permanent program was secured through the bipartisan 2026 Iowa Farm Act. The Choose Iowa program provides $200,000 in funding to help Iowa schools purchase and serve Iowa grown and raised food while creating new market opportunities for Iowa farmers and food businesses. School districts provide 1:1 financial match helping purchase even more local foods for student meal programs.
