Farmers Friend

Farmers Friend Dedicated to providing small farms with specialized tools and supplies to increase efficiency and profitability.

Farmer's Friend, LLC was started with the dream of bringing revolutionary, innovative tools to save labor and time on the tasks a small-scale farmer performs each day. In 2012 we debuted our first labor-saving device to the small-scale growing community—The Quick Cut Green's Harvester. In 2016 we introduced our Caterpillar Tunnel Kits, one of the most affordable and easy to assemble season extensi

on tools on the market today. We are continuing to develop more innovative tools and supplies for small farms, including flame w**ders and ground cover hole burners, just to name a few. (We can't give away all our secrets just yet!)

What specific methods have you found that work to keep the heat down in your high tunnels during the summer?

These tunnels at are a great example of how caterpillar tunnels can be used to their fullest potential. They provide affordable infrastructure that can deliver many of the same benefits as a much larger and more expensive high tunnel.

Pro Tip: If you’re participating in the NRCS High Tunnel Initiative, it’s worth comparing the program payment rates to the actual cost of different tunnel options. Often the price they give you per square foot is significantly more then the cost of the caterpillar tunnels, so you may be able to use the extra money on other investment to help your farm grow.

Managing water drainage around your high tunnels is so important! This is a great example at of a well executed drainage plan.

Pro tip: Install a strip of landscape fabric around the perimeter to reduce w**d encroachment and save ongoing maintenance.

High tunnel ventilation is critical, but what’s the best method? Well… it depends.

In this video, I walk through several common ventilation options and where each one makes sense. The right setup depends on things like:

• Your climate
• Your budget
• Access to electricity
• Tunnel size
• Crops you’re growing

Good ventilation can make a huge difference in temperature, humidity, disease pressure, and overall crop health.

What ventilation setup are you using in your tunnel right now?

A sighting in Sweden!

We get lots of questions about how level or flat your area should be before building a high tunnel. Here are my thoughts.
• For caterpillar tunnels, it’s not a big concern. Just make sure water drainage is addressed so you don’t flood your crops.
• For permanent high tunnels, I recommend no more than a 3 percent grade (3ft of rise or fall over 100ft.)
• Always make sure that water drains away from your tunnel.
A little bit of excavation work to fix drainage and level your area will be well worth it!
