Site prep is key when building a high tunnel! Do it right the first time, and save yourself lots of potential headaches down the road.

• The footprint of your tunnel location should be as close to level as possible. 3% grade is maximum for a high tunnel like this, but less is better.

• Have a plan for controlling water and getting it to flow away from the tunnel. Create drainage swales around and away from the tunnel. Don’t build in a low spot where water can’t drain away.

We recently launched a new 5x6 (5 row 6” spacing) Quick-Plant pattern. This is great for Salanova lettuce, and we are excited to also be seeing a pattern of less disease issues with the small 1.5” holes.

Roll up the sides, open the ends, and pull out the shade cloth! The heat wave has arrived.

At once they start seeing temps it the 90s, it’s time to install shade cloth. 50% shade on the propagation tunnel, and 30% on tunnels where crops are growing.

These tunnels at are a great example of how caterpillar tunnels can be used to their fullest potential. They provide affordable infrastructure that can deliver many of the same benefits as a much larger and more expensive high tunnel.

Pro Tip: If you’re participating in the NRCS High Tunnel Initiative, it’s worth comparing the program payment rates to the actual cost of different tunnel options. Often the price they give you per square foot is significantly more then the cost of the caterpillar tunnels, so you may be able to use the extra money on other investment to help your farm grow.
