FDACS Poultry Exemption Follow-Up

I have to take my hat off to FDACS, they really listened to small farmers all over Florida with their latest revision of the Florida Poultry permit! They sat down with a number of farmers throughout several weeks of public comments and revisions to better understand their role and how they can properly support the Federal PL90-492 Poultry Exemption, within the state of Florida.

FDACS, for their part gave us the best possible language within the confines of the Florida Statues by fully adopting the Federal PPIA (Poultry Products Inspection Act) in which the Poultry Exemption lives, and now the Florida Permit reflects that language.

There are still relics from old statutory Florida Laws such as the Dealer Definitions of 30 dozen eggs a week and the 384 bird a week limit that they have to maintain within the permit until we can get the laws changed. I say this because our attention now needs to turn to legislative efforts where we can make changes within the statues that better replicate the allowances within the Federal Poultry and Egg Exemptions.

The next steps will be for us to organize a political action group to support legislative changes which will ultimately change what FDACS can do within their permits.

Stay tuned and ready to get involved as we work to amend the laws in Florida for small farms!

We have some happy yet sad news to share. We have found ourselves at a crossroads; our demand has continued to grow, and due to time constraints of working full time jobs plus overtime, it was time to hire help and make significant investments in equipment to help us be able to achieve more with the same finite amount of time we have available. But we are not ready to make that leap of faith. We don’t want to continue to grow at the expense of family time. So we have decided to refocus. All of our commercial accounts and Pensacola/surrounding area egg sales will now be handled by our dear friends at McFadyen Manor Homestead, LLC. They are both full time farmers, raising dairy cows, brood pigs, meat birds, eggs and more. They stand on the same principles of rotational pastures, non-gmo grains, and humane care of the animals in their stewardship. They have bought our existing hens and equipment, and use the same or better non-gmo feed. We will jointly be doing our commercial deliveries this Saturday to make introductions, and then starting next week we will be in an advisory position only. We on the other hand will still offer eggs and other products, but only to our family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, congregation, and for on-farm pickup. The eggs will actually be entirely my daughter’s venture, “Sarah’s Coop”. In the meantime, please join us in welcoming our friends, Nathanial and Caitlin McFayden.

Thanksgiving Turkeys!!!!!
The time has come to preorder your non-gmo, pasture-raised turkey for Thanksgiving! We are doing things a little different this year. You MUST pickup your fresh, never frozen turkey on the farm Monday, November 24th. Also, we are charging a flat fee of $120 per turkey, with $60 due at time of pre-order, no refunds if you don’t pickup or cancel. We are shooting for an average weight of 18lbs, but they could be a little more, or a little less. Pre-orders are open now through August 29th. We will NOT have any availability after that, as we only plan to raise what is pre-ordered. Don’t delay, reservations are limited!
