Hendrick House Farm History

The Hendrick House Farm has been led since its inception by Ann Swanson, Farm Director, whose vision, drive, and dedication have made it all possible.

The farm began in 2010 with the idea of institution of food reform. Ann had worked most of her career as a farm-to-table chef in high end kitchens. She applied the idea for the institution food reform and the Hendrick House farm took shape. The farm has grown with the following milestones:

2010- We built a rooftop garden.

2011- Ann and her team started our garden plot at Meadowbrook Park Urbana, IL.

2012- Ann entered the Beginning Farmer Rancher Development Program through the University of Illinois Extension: led by Rick Weinzierl and Mary Hosier. This was a year long grant program to teach people how to become farmers.

2016- Ann became dedicated to building the farm full-time.

2016- Our farm received a SARE (Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education) grant for farm education.

2016- Ann also wrote a nook to help train food service workers on how to identify, handle, and properly store fresh local produce, impacting the educational training.

2016- We started yearly Hendrick House food service worker education training workshops.

2016- We connected with DREAAM House and started youth workshops and community outreach.

2016- Ann and her team redesigned the rooftop garden to a production herb garden on Hendrick House’s roof, making it efficient and economical.

2018- We connected with Julie Anders (Unit 4 Middle School Science Teacher) and CUSF (Champaign Urbana Schools Foundation) to host workshops for Unit 4, Urbana schools and DREAAM House at Fowler Farm, future site of Hendrick House Farm.

2018- We started working with CARE4U (Champaign Area Relationship Education for Youth) and SYEP (Summer Youth Employment Program) to employ and train local high school students so they can acquire real jobs/life skills.

2019- We moved the Hendrick House Farm from U of I to new location on Rising Road at Fowler Farm.

2019- Ann acquired two pigs and a duck to have as pets and use them to teach children the importance of animals on a farm and to bring them closer to what they are eating and where it comes from. The animals also reduce food waste in the company by eating fruit and vegetable scraps from the kitchens.

2019- We designed and built an organic sustainable 10 acre-farm; wash/pack, equipment storage facility, walk-in cooler.

2019- Ann and her team began a CSA (Community supported Agriculture) Program.
