Figs winter treatment. All fig varieties sold by Ticonderoga Farms or The National Botanic Garden are hardy in Northern Virginia. BUT, what does "hardy" mean? In a protected small yard (20x30 for example), with solid fencing, well drained soil (figs do not like wet feet) and southern facing, they all should be fine as long as temps do not fall below 10 degrees F. IF temps fall below that or your exposure, soils, size of yard, etc. are not ideal, the worst that will happen is that the branches freeze back and the plant will resprout from its roots in the spring. As figs are early sprouters, do not cut off branches until one is sure they are really dead. Two ways to determine this - scratch a small area of the bark and if green, it is alive, or simply wait till you see either buds breaking out on the branch or shoots coming from the roots. If buds are breaking out, cut back the dead part of the branch to the first green bud. If no branches are budding and there are small shoots coming from the base, cut all what are now dead branches as low as possible. Depending on the age and health of the tree, even new shoots should bear some figs.
For those who have the time/energy and desire to REALLY protect their plants and get maximum yield, we fill leaf bags with DRY leaves (dry pine needles or even wood shavings, packing peanuts, etc. will also work or even Amazon plastic packing bags or other bubble wrap type material) and tie them around the plant. If branches have spread out, we will put a bag or two inside as well as outside, Tie the whole shebang together tightly (making sure that the bags are tied closed and the closed end faces downward so rain water does not get inside and turn the dry leaves or whatever else is inside into wet mush). One layer of bags will be 3-4 feet high and will guarantee some good branches for extra yield in the spring. We seldom stack them double high as they tend to compact, it is a lot of work, and unless the winter is really cold has never struck us as worth the extra work. Bags should come off mid March, and if weather forecasts are for a warmish march (over 25 for lows), should take off even sooner.
The last two winters have been WARM, so all of our figs have come through with no damage at all - unless extra tall growth is considered a negative (need ladders to harvest, so we cut back). So far 2022 has been fine. Biggest risk is a polar vortex which comes in suddenly and takes temps down to single digits. If something sudden like that happens and we have a plant of any sort we really want to protect, but did not "winterize", we will wrap a blanket around it tying it as tight as possible, then wrap plastic sheet around that ( we have even used dry cleaning bags!). The plastic is to keep the wind out, the blanket to insulate. Then depending on the area inside, we will put one or two 100 watt light bulbs inside - incandescent types or 2 or 3 60 watt and keep them going for as long as the deep freeze lasts. We have also used heating cables generally used for water pipe protection and wrap them around the key stems with 4 to 6 inches between wraps (i.e. 2 or 3 wraps per foot of stem. Still need blankets and plastic as heat cable alone without some protection does not do the job. Bubble wrap should work ok as well, but would still put some sort of cloth over it so one does not get sun scald.

Do you like scallions (or chives) ? - green onion garnish for cooking frying or yummy salads? If so, now is the time to plant the PERENNIAL “walking” onion or “Egyptian” onion.

This will come back year after year in a larger and larger clump. 12 bulbs will provide all that most people would use. Harvest until first hard freeze, and start again after last hard freeze in very early spring (even in a late snow)!

May pick up at office, outside on the porch in plastic produce bags, (26175 Ticonderoga Rd.). Please pay by check to South Riding Community Garden Foundation or SRGC, leaving it in box at door, and email [email protected] beforehand so your order will be ready for you without personal contact. Honor system used so may pick up anytime after placing order.

This onion is a cross between the cultivated garden onion large bulb (allium cepa) and the Welch onion (Allium fistulosum) For full history, recipes, etc. https://www.egyptianwalkingonion.com/

We are sad to announce that we will be delaying the start of our Spring Festival from opening on MARCH 21 to MARCH 28th.

It has been advised that events with over 250 attendees are not recommended at this time and we would like to do our part in ensuring the safety of our community. We hope to see everyone healthy and happy on March 28th!

To all Ticonderoga Family and Friends,

Thank you for your continual support of the farm, being with us and nature as we cherish to share it.
We have been providing seasonal support and services for 50 plus years, but we are hibernating with no tree sales this 2019 Christmas Winter season.
During hibernation, the time will be utilized to prepare for the next decade to come starting in 2020, we will be using this time to plan and work on the next chapter.
The next piece to come is the opening of the gardens and mountain for all to see and enjoy.
For over many decades all have been around to see the agritourism portion of the farm grow and become the favorite family spot or corporate team building atmosphere.
Now the next chapter to this rewarding adventure story will be the gardens and mountain becoming another shared location for those wishing to be joined by marriage, relax near the lakes,
enjoy the xeric and botanical gardens during a tour or educational classes.

Sincerely,

Ticonderoga Farms and Amazing Farm Fun Team/Staff

How can the community help get you guys open for fall? Considering everything is outdoors, there truly shouldn’t be any concern with contagion. Most people have been packed indoors in grocery stores the entire time, and thankfully the virus turned out to be no more harmful than a yearly flu for the vast majority of the population, and isn’t driven by asymptomatic spread! 🙌🏻
Your farm is one of the highlights of the fall season for our family and we cannot imagine not enjoying it this year! I am positive most other willing participants feel the same.
Is the farm open or closed due to COVID? Can’t find any info on your website or this FB page. Tried to call but just got voicemail.
