On Monday we hosted Tru Christian School for a field trip for 4th & 5th grades. ✝️⛪️

We had a wonderful day full of hard work! The kids did ALL the farm chores including cleaning out some smelly wet hay & unloading round bales. They had some great questions about the animals, their lives & their care. We talked about wildlife, the animals we eat, and our pets. They each left with some farm fresh eggs & a smile 🤠💪

Thanks for choosing us for your field trip! We hope everyone had fun & left with some new knowledge

In July I had made a post about my terrible experience trying to buy a hay ring at one of the local Tractor Supply stores in El Paso. And Facebook had a LOT to say about that post 🤣

But here's the thing, we went to Big R- Roswell, NM & had a fantastic experience. I called ahead to make sure they actually had one in stock since online isnt always accurate. Told them we were coming from El Paso. They were kind & helpful over the phone. On arrival they already had it taken apart & ready for transport for us. And even more... it was cheaper & WASN'T DAMAGED. We actually bought some other stuff too, everything together totaled what we would have paid for the feeder at tractor supply. Yes im out the fuel & hours driving but I enjoy road trips so it really wasnt an issue.

Yes theyre big chains so my opinions dont necessarily matter. But Customer service is still important. Yes i still shop at tractor supply (thankfully the store close to me has wonderful employees) but i promise if we had Big R here they'd have my business.

Anyway, now we're set. This will help with hay waste. And since its the same ring I already have in another pen I know how it will hold up. This ring was $435 compared to the $500+ one at tsc

Lets talk EGGS 🥚

The birds have all molted (i think). This is when they lose all their old feathers & grow pretty new ones. They dont lay during this time.

Then we head toward daylight savings. As we start losing daylight the birds start laying less. Through winter they conserve energy to stay warm & slow down or stop laying completely. We do not add light to keep them laying- we allow them to have their natural cycles.

What does this mean for you? We will have EXTREMELY limited amounts of eggs over winter.

Im considering raising the price during this time- they still cost us money to feed.

But for now eggs are $4/dozen, require advance ordering, and we are only able to fill small orders. I will not hold eggs without payment over winter.

Yesterday, October 1 was

🐶 National Black Dog Day 🐶

Celebrated to encourage the adoption of black dogs, who are often overlooked in shelters. It aims to raise awareness about "Black Sog Syndrome", the phenomenon where black dogs are adopted less frequently

Why Black Dogs Are Overlooked

🐕Black Dog Syndrome: Many shelters observe that black dogs take longer to find homes compared to dogs of other colors.

🐕Negative Portrayals: Historical superstitions and cultural myths can associate black dogs with evil or bad luck.

🐕Photography Issues: Black dogs can be difficult to photograph, which makes it harder for them to stand out in online adoption listings.

🐕Perceived as "Ordinary": Black dogs are sometimes seen as "ordinary" and less flashy compared to dogs with more unique coat colors.

Gus met every stigma for why he'd never make it out of the high kill shelter I saw him in- black, bully, senior. But he is the most incredible chunk of love. I'm thankful every day I get to share life with him 🐾💙

It has been a LONG day 😴

Check in for the El Paso County Fair began at 6am this morning.

For the last couple years I have been superintendent of sheep & goats. 🐐🐑 Don't ask me how I was put in charge 🤣

The grounds were flooded & we got off to a late start but our exhibitors showed up & got it done. Congrats to all the kids that showed this year

Now off to bed I go 🛌🌙

Another busy weekend in the books as we try to get things done.

Saturday looked like this

-work was done on my car. We had to change a part in the door & do an oil change 🚗

-all the hay was unloaded & stacked in the barn 🌱

-we made a tractor supply run for a little bit of bird food. We have to fix our storage better to keep the mice out so we only buy what we need for now 🐓

-family night for my job at a baseball game ⚾️

Sunday looked like

-moving round bales
-Petco run & feeding the snakes & tarantulas
-catching up on house chores

Upcoming this week we have:

-El Paso County Fair
-mom visiting to help with fair
-one of my closest friends home from Germany so we will be riding & celebrating our birthdays late 🐎

Busy busy busy 🤠💪
