Chapin Bagels

Chapin Bagels Bringing a little bit of North to the South (just a little). CHAPIN bagels. NOT NY bagels! We make our bagels the old fashioned way. Hand rolled, kettle boiled.

At home bake business. Follow us to see where we’re selling our bagels! We started Chapin Bagels back in April. We moved here in May of 2021 from the little-known borough of New York City… Staten Island. We felt it was time to get out of the big city and get into small town living (or smaller town living seeing that Chapin is exploding these days). We’re a Christian, homeschool family and felt sli

ghtly out of place in the Big Apple. We found Chapin by a blessing, when a friend I use to work with shared this hidden gem with us. It only took one visit to sell us on moving here. We love it here. But that doesn’t mean we don’t miss certain things from our hometown. The top two things we miss? Bagels and pizza (though pizza is a popular debate in the house). My wife, hails from Brooklyn and me, being a Staten Islander, we typically butt heads on who had better bagels and pizza. Staten Island or Brooklyn? An endless debate. As a child, I was always front and center when my mom and grandmothers were cooking up some Italian goodness. In my younger years I worked in a few bagel stores and pizzerias and picked up some dough making skills. As a retired NYPD detective I spent some time in the many bagel stores of NYC. At times, it was the only thing a cop can grab to eat while working the streets. When we moved here, we quickly realized…. “There aren’t any bagels. The horror!” I started whipping up a batch here and there. We handed them out to friends we met down here and the consensus was we should start selling them. One of the first people we met down here was Don Williams, aka “The Hillbilly” of Hillbilly’s Farm Stand. I dropped some bagels off to him so he could try a REAL bagel and once he said “G. You need to sell these..” that’s when Chapin Bagels was born. That’s where we’re at now. I make small batches of hand rolled, kettle boiled, New York style bagels. My wife and daughter are the official taste testers and quality control experts. If it doesn’t pass their standards, I won’t sell it. One day, I’m catching bad guys and the next, I’m seasoning bagels. Life is good. We have no idea where this endeavor will lead us but we’re enjoying the chance to meet new people and getting to share a little taste of our old home with our new neighbors.

As a small local business, we try to stay out of politics. But when an issue has the potential to shape the future of Chapin for generations, we believe it's important to encourage people to get informed and get involved.

If you live in Chapin, please take the time to read the proposed development agreement and consider attending the upcoming public hearing. If you're unable to attend, you can also share your thoughts with Lexington County Council at:
[email protected].

Right now, only a small number of residents have spoken up. With nearly 30,000 people living in our zip code, that's surprising considering how much this project could impact our community.

Based on the terms currently being discussed, the development could include a minimum of 600 homes on the property, along with commercial development. When combined with other nearby proposed projects, the total could approach 1,000 new homes in this area.

Whether you support the project or oppose it, the facts matter. Traffic, schools, emergency services, infrastructure, jobs, and long-term planning will affect all of us.

Many residents have understood for years that this property was intended to become a business park that would attract employers and expand the commercial tax base. Others believe residential growth is needed. Regardless of where you stand, now is the time to review the proposal for yourself and make your voice heard.

One thing is certain: decisions like this will shape Chapin long after we're all gone.

Please stay informed, participate in the process, and respectfully let your elected officials know where you stand.
