I’ve been really enjoying the snow we’ve gotten lately. It’s not been too much. It hasn’t been too difficult to manage. It hasn’t been crazy windy or bitterly cold. Or unseasonably warm and rainy. It’s just, what I think, is pleasant New England winter weather.

Good morning from a very cold hill top farm. It’s one degree out now and the wind is whipping across the fields. It’s loud and it hisses at everything in its way. It kept me up last night worrying about what its capable of and wishing I had better housing for my animals. Our house is usually pretty warm but you could feel it suck the heat right out and it was cold when gout out of bed. I checked on everyone when I first got up and broke open frozen waters. Yesterday we loaded everyone up with hay for the weekend. I bottle fed our lamb and warmed up a bottle for a new calf born last night. It was too cold to take any chances with him not nursing right away so we fed him a bottle of colostrum before calling it a night. This was his mom’s first calf and she wasn’t quite sure what to do with him. I was happy to see him nursing away, this morning, though, so I didn’t give him the bottle. The old pony ripped his blanket. I put a blanket on him that’s twice his size so I can mend his. I put out birdseed but it was blown away. So I made a hole in the crusty snow and piled some seed in it. Hopefully, it will stay put. The other day I saw a cardinal blown right off the feeder by a strong gust of wind. He was undeterred, though, and fought to stay at the feeder for a while. Now I’m warming my feet by the fire so I can go back out and get on with my day.

Calves were out today. They were easy to get back in, though. Their gate was swung wide open and I’m not sure how it got that way. It has be so windy but I wouldn’t think that could have unlatched it. And they would have been out a lot earlier if it was left open when they were last fed. Maybe not… I don’t know. It’s a mystery. I’ll have to keep an eye on it.

We had a new bull calf born to a first calf heifer. He wasn’t getting the whole nursing thing. First calf heifers sometimes aren’t sure of what to do either so we had to help them out. Momma Cinnamon was so patient, though, and we made good progress. For a cow that’s never been handled before she was so reasonable. And her mom was a kicker. Thank you Cinnamon!

Hanging with the heifers. These girls are moving through the last pasture rotation of the season. Soon we’ll bring them in for the winter. I’m ready to be done with moving fence; putting it up and taking it down day after day. By the end of winter, at the start of the next grazing season, I’ll be ready to do it all again. But, for now I need a break.

Today wasn’t too bad. But a cold wind picked up this evening with the rain and no one wanted to linger outside doing chores. We got in just before dark to a warm pot of beef curry and a game of cards before bed.
