We had a great couple of days when Marysa and her close friend Shane visited last week. Marysa was a rider/trainer for us some years ago, when we were still breeding Norwegian Fjord horses and we hadn’t seen her since she’s been overseas training Irish sport ponies (in Ireland). In addition to her horse-related Skills, she is also an accomplished singer/songwriter with original songs published under her stage name Marysa Eve.

Well, Norma and I were out burning a pile of brush noticed that the barn swallows have returned. They’ve already started building new ones or renovating old nests in our big old hay barn a process that’s been going on for millennia. This is always a sign that their food supply (mosquitoes and other flying insects) such as that will be bugging (us so to speak) shortly.

Norma and Jolene found this on the edge of the back mowing today while picking up brush before haying starts. We don’t have grizzlies here ( thankfully) but i expect this is sign of a large black bear. Pretty fresh too.

Facebook wouldn’t let me upload the full file so this isn’t the whole interaction between these two Tom‘s. I’ve always wondered, how do they decide who wins and gets to breed the hens?

It doesn’t take much to keep Griffin happy. Sometimes, any stick will do.

We had a pretty exciting afternoon yesterday while we were completing loading our van for a syrup delivery this morning. I could smell smoke down at the sugarhouse and when I went up the road to investigate there was a pretty good grass fire going on the property just to the north of our farm that had been caused by a tree taking down a powerline. Fortunately, several Fire departments turned out, including Charlemont, Rowe, Buckland, Colraine and perhaps one other. Given that When I got to the fire, the flames were only about 30 feet from our nearest neighbors home we were really thankful to see the trucks coming up the road to get it under control. Our thanks to all our neighbors why volunteer for such important work.

We’ve had several good runs the last few days with temps at night in the low to mid 20s and highs reaching the 40s with the wind out of the west or north west giving us plenty of sap to concentrate and boil from. we’re still making very light colored but excellent tasting syrup. The forecast is for good more good runs this coming week

Things are about to get really busy around here. This was the run we had yesterday and it ended up running all night so gonna be boiling today.

Well, it looks as if the 2026 sugaring season has started for us here in Western Massachusetts. We were fully tapped by 2 March this year and it ran enough to generate 2000 gallons of nice looking sap that tested 2.5° brix, sugar content. We decided to turn the RO on today in order to process that initial 2000 and about another 1000 gallons that came in today into concentrate currently at 18° brix. Depending on what happens tomorrow we will need to boil for the first time on either Saturday or Sunday. I’ll try to upload pic in subsequent posts.
