Using raw wool as mulch for vegetable beds is such a win-win. It is naturally a deer repellent, absorbs water and slowly releases it with all of the fertility a growing plant needs. Protects the soil while also keeping weeds from germinating and poking through its entanglement of coarse fibers. In the heat of the summer, the white reflects the suns rays while it naturally decomposes leaving no synthetic residues like fossil fuel derived plastic. Great for soil! Great for food!
We U.S wool producers need to get crafty with our wool because in today it only has a value of less than $.01/lb. U.S companies that use wool in their products purchase it cheaper (due to less expensive supply chain infrastructure and labor) from other countries versus seeking and supporting domestic fiber supply chain infrastructure projects. Also take into account the lack of U.S fiber policy and subsidies for domestic infrastructure. A fun fact, the U.S used to be a leader in wool sheep production, as well as h**p and flax.
Let’s talk about ways to support local and grow natural fiber businesses at scale in the US. No wars, no sanctions, no fertilizer required, to grow natural domestic fibers for some of our clothes and housing needs if we focused policies on domestic supply chain infrastructure for food and fiber!
