Boy oh boy, it is HOT on the farm this week! For some reason that late August heat wave is always the hardest to cope with. Maybe because we've got fall in our sights!

But everyone has shade--including our rams and the honey bees. And we're all crossing our fingers and hooves for some cooler temperatures next week.

More baby chicks on the farm! It's the time of year when we replenish the layer and broiler flocks ahead of cold weather. All of our chickens have plenty of grassy space to range through, so that they can have as natural and healthy a lifestyle as possible. These little ones will be out on grass within two weeks or so, once they've started to grow feathers!

RIP to farm OG Darcy, the cat who lived (almost) forever.

Twenty-three years ago, we adopted two young cats from a local rescue shelter. We put pairs of names into a hat and picked one out. Among the offerings were Beavis and Butthead, Shadow and Flame, and Pinky and the Brain. The winning slip? Darcy (grey) and Wickham (orange).

They lived happily outdoors, with regular feedings on the second-floor side porch and a well-bedded house of their own outside, for two decades. Every morning, they stared at us from the rooftop until we came out with the day's rations.

When Wickham died two years ago, we started letting Darcy into the house on cold nights. He would curl up on the sofa, snooze soundly, and then ask to be let out the next morning. Other than that, he just kept on keeping on.

Today, he ate an enormous breakfast, curled up on his bed, and went to sleep.

About the best end you could hope for. We'll miss you, old man.

We're training our newly weaned lambs (Leicester Longwool and Merino) to respect the electric fence, so that they can go out with the main flock in a couple of weeks! The small enclosure just outside the lambing barn means that each one of them will eventually venture out, bite the wire, and then will never do it again. This sounds mean, but it's the best way to teach them to stay safe inside the fence so that they can enjoy all of the great grazing on the other side of the farm. The shock is mild, even though uncomfortable. And, as you can see, our livestock guardian dogs are keeping a close eye on them.
