Spring at Young Harvests Farm brings ramps, carrots, and 2 NEW FARMERS MARKETS!

HELLO SPRING!

The daffodils and bluebells here at Young Harvests Farm have been blooming and the landscape is filling in with lush green. We have welcomed back some of our seasonal team members recently as well as a new member of the Young Harvests family. Yes, all the renewing signs of Spring have been blooming.

THERE ARE TWO NEW FARMERS MARKETS WHERE YOU CAN FIND US!

During the winter season we are only at one Farmers Market each week, but this weekend is the start of our busy season. We will be at Pike and Rose in Rockville starting THIS SATURDAY, as well as a new location in NOVA THIS SUNDAY. Of course we will also be at our usual Bethesda Elementary location on Sundays.

Stay tuned for the addition of a fourth location coming soon to Sundays.

You can read more info about these farmers market locations on the Central Farmers Market website. (https://www.centralfarmmarkets.com/)

IT’S RAMP SEASON!

This wild growing onion is only available for a short period of time. Make sure you show up early to secure your ramps! Allium tricoccum are related to leeks and garlic but are famed for their more intense flavor and aroma. They are great cooked with eggs, potatoes, mushrooms, or anything that pairs well with onions and garlic. They also make a delicious snack when pickled with apple cider vinegar and sugar.

PBS filmed this weeks episode of Culinary Concert at our farm!
Chef Marion Ohlinger, from Morgantown, used our tomatoes in a variety of dishes.

In this week's episode, is Attack of the Killer 'Maters! We will be featuring Young Harvests. This facility in Jefferson County West Virginia uses sustainable methods to grow just about everything! We tried Wasabi arugula and sweet habaneros while we were there collecting tomatoes for this week's show. And for our folks in the DMV area...you can find Young Harvests Farm at Farmers Markets in Rockville, MD on Saturdays, and Bethesda, MD on Sundays. You can find out more about them at https://www.youngharvestsfarm.com/

New Year’s resolutions for better health? Include more delicious greens!

Happy New Year! This time of year we are always making resolutions to better ourselves, and nutritious organic greens are a perfect fit for your health goals.

The varieties of lettuce we use in our famous salad mix varies each week, but we usually have some staples like: red oak, green oak, sweet crisp, butter crunch, and mache.

Lettuce of the week: MACHE (pronounced “mosh”)

What does “mâche” mean?
Mâche means “lamb’s lettuce” in French, because it resembles a lamb’s tongue. This lettuce also goes by “corn salad,” “field salad,” and “nut lettuce.”

Not actually lettuce?
Mâche does not actually belong to the lettuce family but is a member of Caprifoliaceae (honeysuckle), a family of dicotyledonous flowering plants.

What are the health benefits?
Mâche lettuce has many antioxidants including Vitamin A, Vitamin C, lutein and b-carotene. Antioxidants are anti-aging and help to prevent disease. Mâche is a very good source of Vitamin K, which promotes healthy bones and blood clotting, improved episodic memory in adults (and helps Alzheimer’s patients), and may improve heart health and lower the risk of stroke.

Our winter production is lower than our summer months, so please pre-order your salad mix to make sure you don’t miss out. Pre-orders are available for pickup at the Young Harvests Farm booth - Sundays at Bethesda Elementary Farmers Market.

Hello & Goodbye from our Interns!

Hello Young Harvests Family!

I thought it might be fitting to introduce myself. My name is Alexa, and I have been an intern at Young Harvests since May. When I joined the YH crew, Rob needed someone new to write this newsletter and manage social media, and, for me, the chance to write about salad, vegetables, and farming felt like a dream. I also worked at the Pike & Rose market on Saturdays, and one of my favorite parts of this job has been getting to know our Rockville customers. But, this newsletter has also allowed me to share my farm experience with Young Harvest supporters far and wide. The recipes I shared were usually ones I had tried for our Friday group lunch, the photos were always taken out in the field while harvesting and the stories were always "farm fresh." This newsletter really was my love letter to the farm. I am forever grateful to Rob for giving me creative freedom and all of you for being such loyal readers.

However, this is also where I say goodbye. My time at Young Harvests is sadly coming to a close at the end of October. My time here has been life-changing, and I feel I will always have a home in Charles Town, West Virginia. I also know I will definitely never look at or eat salad the same way again! My next adventure is taking me near Sacramento, CA for the winter and then, come springtime, another farm somewhere out west (TBD!)

THIS WEEK ONLY changes for Bethesda Market

Hi everyone! Here are some important changes to the Bethesda market for this week only:

This Sunday, October 10, the Bethesda Central Market will be in the Bethesda Farm Women's Market parking lot at 7155 Wisconsin Ave.

This location is just a half-mile from the elementary school where the market usually takes place, and you can look out for the signs and flags at the new site.

In addition, because of the location change, we will not be accepting online orders for Bethesda Central.

However, you can still pre-order for the Pike Central Market at Pike & Rose. We will be there Saturday from 9am-1:30pm at the new location next to Bark Social!

Online orders will be back for Bethesda Central next week!

Here’s a scrapbook of what the week on the farm was like, featuring our harvest highlights ✨

First up, is roselle hibiscus/Jamaican sorrel/ Florida Cranberry! These plants have been growing in our fields for months and we were so excited to FINALLY harvest the fruits. We can get enough of the deep red color and pointy shape. These can be used to make teas, punches, jams, sauces and syrups. Buy a carton and have fun with it 💃

Some of our summer staples- ahem, eggplant and basil- are still kickin’ and ready for your dinner table 😋 While we are eager to start picking out heartier brassicas… seeing the deep and shiny purple of the baby eggplants this week really brought us some joy. If you haven’t tried them yet, run don’t walk to get a carton at market this weekend.

Lastly, our bouquets are looking as gorgeous as ever. This week, we even included Thai basil flowers and asparagus plant - some of our favorite cover crops.

If that all sounds exciting to you, come say hello at the farmers market this weekend! Rob may even be making an appearance at Pike Central 🙃

We will NOT be at the NOVA market for the rest of the season 😞 But you can still find us Saturday at Pike Central and Sunday at Bethesda Central, 9am-1:30pm.

Taking a breath

Things have been feeling a bit lighter lately. If you're a regular customer at the farmer's market, you may have noticed that we have fewer items for sale, and have been selling out of products much faster than usual. Don't worry; it's not you, it's us.

September is that funny time when our hot-weather items are almost done growing, and our heartier fall items are not quite ready to harvest. Admittedly, it's weird for us too. We don't have as many endless mornings spent harvesting and our Fridays prepping for markets are not running into the evening like in the height of summer. But this extra time means we can work on projects around the farm that allow us to grow even more food in the future!

We appreciate your understanding during this "down" time. In just a few weeks, we will be back with more lettuces, brassicas (yay, fall!), arugula, squashes, and herbs! However, if you're worried about not getting your precious salad, arugula or spinach, you can always pre-order online 😁

Reminiscing

Despite persistent heat and rain in the DMV, the calendar tells us that fall is right on our heels. Changes in season help us reflect, and this year is no different. We can't help but reminisce on the early summer days when everyone let out a sigh of relief; the list of summer plans was long and hopeful, the air was warming up by the day, and the farm was still on the upward slope towards its prime.

On one of those early summer days, Anne Young led her preschool summer camp through our fields. The kids picked at sugar snap peas, inspected lettuce heads, and learned about soil health from Rob. It was magical to see Anne and Rob come together to do what they both love most and educate young minds about the power of food.

It feels fitting that we capped the summer season with a visit from librarian Brian of the Charles Town Library. Brian hosts a weekly bedtime story series on Facebook live from various farms and businesses in Charles Town. We couldn't say no when Brian asked to visit Young Harvests to read to our youngest farm resident, Taco's son, Freeman. Isn't he the cutest??!!!

The farm is our classroom, and eating local and sustainable food is an ongoing education that we're proud to be a part of, no matter the season.
