Peas: Chicken tacos. And elote. Chicken tacos raw point. Everything was hot and fresh and the tortillas were crispy. Tacos were prepared in Mexican style. The Elote was really good. It was mixed in a classic fashion and you could tell the corn was flat grill cooked.

Carrots: she got Carne Asada tacos. She loved them. She got Mexican style. She also thought the tortillas were crispy.

Overall: Food was hot and fresh and prepared quickly. There was a nice assortment of soft drinks and overall four tacos, Elote, and two soft drinks with a tip was still under 30 bucks. We love, food trucks, and we love Mexican food, so wow we’re gonna keep looking for more food trucks, I’m sure we’ll be back because peas would like to try their torta.

Peas: Single burger with bacon and cheese. You order all your fixings separately. Peas got lettuce, onion, and tomato. He completed his meal with waffle fries

Carrots: She got a single burger with bacon and added lettuce and tomato. She completed her meal with onion rings.

Overall: this was our first time at this establishment and we were pleasantly surprised. The service was extremely good and the food was cooked very fast. The burgers were smashed style and enjoyable. Everything was hot and tasted fresh. The onion rings were great and crispy. The waffle fries were fine, but didn’t hold crisp as one would hope. Also the waffle fries could’ve used some seasoning. That said it was a great takeout dinner at the price point. Finally, the server, who was also the cook, represented the business well.

Place: Southpaw Social
Location: Mahomet, IL
Meal: Dinner
Cost: 15-20 (drinks and tip not included)
Category: casual dining
Cuisine: American pub
Host: we sat outside so no host.
Server: Kind, Attentive, but busy. Felt like she was doing her best to handle inside and outside.
Atmosphere: we have sat inside and outside and we would say outside is better when weather cooperates. inside can just get crowded and loud quickly.
Score: 8 out of 10.
Would we return: Yes (we have been a few times and will post again to review breakfast.)

Appetizer: southwest eggrolls. Exterior is crunchy and all the right ways and inside is full of chicken and black bean and some other goodness. Nice ranch to dip them in; you can kick it up a notch with chipotle ranch if you want

Peas: he has been here a few times and traditionally keeps going for the patty melt. Tonight, he got the breakfast burger. Traditional burger that comes with bacon and an egg. Each time he’s been the burgers have been cooked well and tonight the fries were everything you hope they’d be from a pub french fry. I asked for coleslaw and they messed that up but the bonus was I got coleslaw and french fries. The server was very quick to resolve the issue and profusely apologized.

Carrots: She had the bougie BLT. It was good, but it arrived with an unordered egg on top of it. The french fries were also solid. Peas and carrots both agree that while the egg was great for the burger and the BLT that it was over hard and should’ve been over easy so the yolk ran better. We would also recommend that you consider promoting the bougie BLT with the option of adding the egg and avocado as we think that would be brilliant.

Overall: We have eaten at southpaw social several times. Tonight we chose our review. We try to give places time and also want to be random. The staff has always been amazing and the vibe is small town local but in a good and welcoming way. We are fans and believe their breakfast menu is great. We wish they would diversify their specials more and the fries are not always consistent. They have a small bar and decent canned beer selection.

Cuisine: American pub
Host: friendly (very busy place)
Server: Took a bit for our server to get to us but when he did he was very attentive.
Location: St. Louis, Missouri
Atmosphere: Historical. Great spot with families wanting a fun place to eat after going to the zoo.
Score: 5 out of 10.
Would we return: Yes

Appetizer: pickle chips. We are sad to say they changed the recipe. They were decent but they used to offer the best pickle chips we had ever tasted. Now thicker and crinkle cut where as they used to be thin me and lighter. So, they were good but were once legendary.

Peas: He got patty melt with house made Cole slaw. Meat cooked good, they use American cheese and the onions were lacking. Finally, it was on Texas toast but it was not super thick, which was nice. Side: Chose Cole slaw for the side and it was on point. Tasted fresh cabbage and did not have too much mayo.

Carrots: She had the chicken club, which was fine. The fries were not good, sadly.

Fitz’s soda: we tried root beer, strawberry, orange and black cherry and all were tasty.

Overall: We loved Fitz’s and it was a staple with our St. Louis visits. Second must do is usually Ted Drewes for frozen custard but time and capacity kept that from happening. Sadly this once must do has slipped. We would skip for Bogart’s Smokehouse (which is amazing) instead. We would return with friends who have never been.
Tip: if you love vinyl, get shop across the street. Also, if visiting on the weekends, make reservations.

Place: Yo Yo’s (Evening Bar experience)
Meal: Dinner
Cost: 12-15 (drinks and tip not included
Category: casual dining
Cuisine: American pub
Host: bartender and he immediately welcomed us
Server was excellent. We had two. Simon and Corey working in tandem and they were very attentive.
Location:Mahomet, IL
Atmosphere: Pub; very clean, welcoming and family friendly.
Nice balance of good music in multiple TVs with sports options
Score say 9 out of 10.
Would we return: yes

Appetizer: chips and dip. It’s excellent. Tortilla chips that come with nacho cheese, avocado dip, and a dip that is a riff off street corn. I’ve had this a few times and it’s been consistently good. The exact type of appetizer you would hope to find at a pub. Also, their wings are very much on point.

Peas: He got the flatbread. The supreme. Peas finds the flatbread to be highly underrated in town. Always hot, and taste, crisp and fresh. A wonderful personal pizza.

Carrots: She got the Caesar wrap with waffle fries. The rap is a very generous size and taste good. The waffle fries tasted good and had a nice seasoning on them, but she wished they would’ve been a little bit more crispy. That said, they don’t have a deep fryer on premises so they are oven baked. From that perspective, they are very good, but are never gonna be the same as something dropped in a deep fryer.

Bar: the bar is not expensive, but has a very nice selection of red and white wine, beer, and some basic level bourbons and they do offer creative drink specials.

Overall: we really like this restaurant a ton. We like the atmosphere, we like the consistency of the food and the variety of drinks. We are a bit biased on the servers, but that’s one of the things we like about small town pubs. You get to know the staff and they become family and extended family and hanging out is like catching up with a good friend over a meal. That is a lost gift in our country and what makes yo-yo‘s such a gem.

Host: Greeted us kindly, we had a reservation and we were seated in a booth promptly. Server was Allie and she was attentive, kind and helpful when came to ordering, Carrots asked questions concerning their dinner special and Allie went to the kitchen to get answers so Carrots was informed on her dinner choice.
Score: 7 out of 10
Would we return: yes
Appetizers: We had their cheese curds and onion rings. Both were delicious and we would return for the curds alone!
Peas: He ordered the Nashville Fried Chicken sandwich with all the toppings and a side salad with blue cheese dressing. Bun and toppings were fresh, but to call it Nashville chicken you would think it would be hot and it was not. There was good flavor on the two fried chicken tenders and cooked well. But disappointing on a sandwich with 2 tenders instead of one good size piece of fried chicken. He was very impressed with the side salad!
Carrots: She ordered their 12ounce Sirloin ( medium rare) special with sauted mushrooms on top served with Bavarian Bacon Potatoes and a side Caesar salad. The steak had good flavor but fibrous throughout. The potatoes were interesting, reminded her of a warm German potato salad. The salad was very limp and the dressing was not flavorful.
Overall takeaway of Engrained was a decent pub to stop in and catch up with friends. For those interested they have a very extensive beer menu.

Place: Oceans
Insider Tip: you have to pay $10 to enter the resort. Keep your parking pass and bring it into the restaurant with you and they will apply that $10 to your bill, in essence making the parking free. Also, it’s worth making an earlier reservation to be able to enjoy the outdoor view after your meal. When we were there, they also had live music. Meal: Dinner
Cost: $60-100 per person (food, drink, no tip figured in).
Category: business casual dining
Cuisine: American Seafood
Host: welcomed kindly and seated quickly. We had reservations and mentioned it was our anniversary on reservation. They greeted us at the door with a happy anniversary. Nice touch.
Server was good. Tom was very attentive and great with recommendations and frequently checked up on us. The manager also stopped by our table to check in as well and we saw him do that with several other tables, which was nice to see. Location: Hilton Head, South Carolina
Atmosphere: formal country club vibe. Indoor and outdoor seating with the ocean about 100 yards away.
Score say 10 out of 10.
Would we return: yes

Place: Charleston Crab House
Meal: Lunch
Cost: $20-40 per person (food, drink, no tip figured in).
Category: casual dining
Cuisine: American Seafood
Server/host: host was attentive and we were told 15 minutes but seated in about 5.
Server was good, direct, attentive and quick. She mixed up our sides but not a huge deal.
Location: Charleton, South Carolina
Atmosphere: Great pub vibe across from market building. Historical area of Charleston. Tourist vibe and family friendly. Outdoor balcony available. It can get a bit loud. We sat upstairs but bathroom is only downstairs (insider info…lol)
Score: 8 out of 10.
Would we return: yes

Appetizers: hushpuppies and dried blue crab claws. Hush puppies were amazing and came with honey butter; that was unique and tasted great. Crab legs were delicious and came with ranch. That said the hushpuppies were the star. Sweet and delicious, like the Krispy Kreme of hushpuppies, and the honey butter made them lights out. The best hushpuppies we have ever had.

Peas: blackened reddish sandwich with collard greens. Fish was great but the bun was average. The blackened flavor was noticeable. Greens were solid.

Carrots: crab cake sandwich with waffle fries. Crab cake was good and remoulade was. Ice but the bun was nothing special, and the lettuce and tomato were fresh. The waffle fries were not hot but warm and sadly forgettable

Overall: fun place that we would visit again. Peas loves seafood whereas carrots does not. The hushpuppies were the star and we would come back just for those.

Meal: Dinner
Restaurant: Poseidon.
Cuisine: American (seafood)
Location: Hilton Head, SC (Location is nice, with a wonderful outdoor rooftop table overlooking the intracoastal.)
Cost: 40-60 per person (Meal, appetizer, and drinks, not including tip).
Hostess: Quick and attentive (we had a reservation), and we were seated quickly.
Server: We had a main server (who was fine, not amazing), but we were also checked up on by two different managers.  They seemed to care that we were happy.
Overall score: 6.5/10
Would we return?  Been there, done that; checked off our list.

The details:
Apps: Fried pickles were decent, crunchy with good flavor, and a sweet dipping sauce.  Peas also got a shrimp cocktail (the shrimp was good, but the cocktail sauce was not spicy enough).
Peas: Grilled redfish, sweet potato, and mixed vegetables.  Everything was cooked great, and the fish was delicious, grilled very well, and the rest of the plate was solid.
Carrots: Lobster roll and fries.  The lobster roll was butter-poached and, while cooked well, lacked flavor; Carrots prefers the New England style.  She had to ask for mayo to help the roll out, and the lettuce was put on too early, leaving it wet and wilted from the lobster’s heat. The French fries were a total miss. Cole slaw was one bite, and no thank you.

Our Conclusion:
Classic “peas and carrots” meal.  Peas happy, carrots disappointed; this combo happens a lot.  Location is great, and the place was full.  Happy hour featured nice drink specials and great, very reasonable appetizers.  Great views, but they are banking more on the views than on the food.  We would have scored them higher, but the price point justified a better meal.
