Earth Care Farm

Earth Care Farm Earth Care Farm (ECF) is the oldest operating farm composter in RI- since 1977! In 1977 Mike and Betty Merner started Earth Care Farm.
(1)

With the goal of producing a micro-organism rich, nutritive compost for use on our own family farm fields, Mike developed methods to produce compost from locally sourced and blended natural materials. The composting operation gradually grew, resulting in the efficient bulk operation we have today. Our mature compost is a long term source of nutrients for your farm fields, garden beds, and landsca

ping. You can purchase our bulk and bagged compost products at the farm in Charlestown, RI, and at selected retailers. We also grow chemical-free, pick-your-own crops on our compost-enriched fields, which are available at the farm seasonally.

A glimpse into this funny dad/ daughter farmer relationship. It’s beautiful and silly and there’s a lot of work to do on this land. But we bring great balance to each other.

Looks like a beautiful weekend to come see how this black, beautiful compost is made! Join farmer Jayne by the farm office at 10 am on 5/16 for a one hour walk and talk about our farming practices and compost production. We end the tour with a peek into the microscope viewing the universe in a single drop of compost.

We were planning to talk about growing garlic but this happened instead. ☺️ This message felt more pressing than the garlic.

My cup is full! Had the honor of spending a few days with this amazing group of Vermont composters at the Vermont Organics Recycling Summit. Vermont is the absolute leader in the USA compost scene so to be the keynote at their 20th annual conference was a “pinch me” moment.

Photo 3: the rare sighting of 2 second generation composters together! With Sid Hammer from and me

Thank you Vermont!
