Chemotherapy saves lives, but it can come with side effects. When Andrea (pictured) was going through her cancer treatment, she had to deal with “overwhelming” chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN), a type of nerve damage that can make people lose feeling and control in their hands and feet.
There’s currently no way of treating CIPN, so, even though Andrea’s treatment was helping to shrink her cancer, her doctors had to change it.
Now, though, thanks to research from scientists like Professor Alison Lloyd, there’s scope for us to make CIPN much less of a problem. Her team has developed a better way of understanding how chemotherapy drugs affect the nervous system. From here, we’re helping other world-leading scientists tackle this side effect head on.
