B**R UPDATE: NEW ARRIVALS, SNALLYGASTER EDITION

WHAT IS 'SNALLYGASTER'?

In American history and mythology, the legend of the Snallygaster came over with German immigrants during the early stages of colonization.

In the 1700s sighting of the 'dragon/bird chimera' began in the mountains of western Maryland, remaining legend well into the 1900s including 'sightings' and mysterious deaths attributed to the beast up to World War I.

It remained folklore until 2012 when the D.C. Brewer's Guild honored its fearsome visage for their b**r festival. What began as a strictly local/regional craft b**r festival has grown in a decade+ to one of the most diverse and best-attended b**r events in the Mid-Atlantic.

WHAT DOES SNALLYGASTER MEAN FOR YOU?

You should be excited as a b**r fan for Snallygaster, even if you are not attending the festival, as it brings us even more choices for great craft b**r than probably any other time of the year. Regular favorites go deeper into their portfolio to send more limited releases, while some producers make their sole delivery to the Mid-Atlantic each year just for this event.

Several of our favorite distributors do a great job taking care of their customers by getting tastes out there, some in advance of the festival on 10/10, others afterwards depending on what survives the weekend.

Not everything listed below is specific to Snallygaster, such as the Adroit Theory or Trillium, but there is definitely a lot of influence from the festival to get some extra-fun things out to customers.

This first wave is decidedly IPA-heavy (with a few exceptions), but there will be a broader selection of styles with some later-arriving producers and some post festival offerings. Stay tuned....

INSIDER’S PICK: 2025 AGR. MARANGONA CHIARETTA (Rose)RIVIERA DEL GARDA CLASSICO - ITALY $24.99

Moving into the Fall we want to remind you that good Rose really doesn’t have a season, and can (should) have a place at the table all year round.

While Provence Rose from France is the most famously recognizable and easiest to find, Italy is equally impressive not only for the quality but the sheer diversity of character.

We have them represented from Sicily all the way through The Boot up to this one in the North on the shores of Lake Garda. Built primarily from local grape varieties Groppello and Marzemino, and while it shares the salmon pink color with a Provence Rose it pretty much branches out on its own from there.

High toned peach and cranberry aromas with a very unique and singular floral note, somewhere between dried flowers and anise seed depending on the swirl.

Initially juicy feeling the palate quickly gets into tart watermelon and high energy white fruits with a zap of salinity that would seem coastal influenced if it weren’t coming from an Alpine lake.

This has more than enough body and complexity to run with most fish, salmon or white meat dishes well into the cooler weather.

INSIDER’S PICK: 2023 VIGNERONS DE YURA JURANCON SEC (Decanter 97points) - FRANCE $23.99

Most w**e fans in Virginia should be far more familiar with the w**es of Jurancon than the average drinker worldwide.

The small remote region at the base of the French Pyrenees is home to the Petit Manseng grape, which has grown by leaps and bounds in popularity among w**eries in the region.

In Jurancon Petit Manseng is often paired with its sister grape, Gros Manseng, which looks very similar on the vine but makes a drier more Sauvignon Blanc-esque w**e.

Also a very durable grape, so don’t be surprised if you see some Gros Manseng ending up in Virginia based on the success of Petit Manseng. ‘Yura’ comes from the local Basque influenced spelling of Jurancon, and this cooperative works with dozens of local growers that are ‘peasants at heart’, as much of the production comes from mixed agriculture farms, not solely vineyards.

Deep juicy lime, peach and apricot aromas that you can pick up a foot or more from the glass, with an underlying cool zest or ginger root twang.

The palate is fleshy and juicy with a lot of that white fruit flavor from the Petit Manseng, but zero sweetness, and the finish is all limes and brightness with some fine skin tannin dryness. Similar in some ways to a White Bordeaux but with more exotic flavors in play, this is a great option with fish or poultry, the more complex the better.

You don't see that many of the 5L mini kegs any more, at least with very good b**r inside anyway. If you aren't familiar with them, these are the mini kegs with the built in tap and gravity fed with the air valve on the top, 100% self-contained. I think the guys at O.E.C. may have run next door to the B.United warehouse and stole themselves some empties to play with for themselves, because these faux wood plank cans are EXACTLY what Schlenkerla has used when they've offered this format. This lineup of colossal b**rs needed its own email feature. Not only are they great quality from top to bottom, their labels are ALWAYS doing the horror movie/heavy metal scariness 24/7, not just for Halloween.

Two labels of particular note this round if you want to get your scare on this October. 'The Devil Made Me' shows off a montage of serial killer mug shots, eyes covered and in various states of disturbing appearance. 'Oh Bother' is a mashup of Winnie The Pooh and 'Walking Dead' with Christopher Robin assuming the role of Negan in the Hundred Acre Woods.
Poor Pooh. He deserved a better fate.

INSIDER’S PICK: 2025 APOLLO’S PRAISE RIESLING SENECA LAKE LAHOMA VINEYARD- NY $21.99

We have been on an absolute ROLL with the Riesling selections coming in recently, highlighted by some killer vintage re-releases from Germany and some wicked Old Vine Californian jobs.

So when we say that our sampling of Rieslings from this producer may just be the biggest surprise of all, that’s really carrying a lot of weight.

Owners Kelby James Russell and Julia Rose Hoyle are long time Finger Lakes industry veterans, with Kelby earning notoriety as w**emaker of Red Newt Cellars for much of the last 20 years.

The opportunity came to purchase one of the backbone properties in Red Newt’s success, Lahoma Vineyard, and the couple started their own w**ery with a focus on w**es from this property.

In just a few short years the w**es have received remarkable acclaim, not just for their single block releases but for their basic w**es at all levels of sweetness.

It’s easy to make a Riesling sweet, but to make it complex and compelling at the same time is the alchemy that makes the best ones so memorable; this is absolutely one of those.

Crunchy pear and fresh cut lime aromas with some white flowers and stone fruits, even some citrus tones, just everchanging and lovely every time you put your nose in.

The palate is quite juicy and the residual sugar is noticeable at first but gets followed up with great energy and complexity, acidity inside the w**e keeps the flavors constantly moving across the tongue and a long pear skin tannin feel that feels drier and nervier the longer your mouth is empty.

Fans of German w**es NEED to get these w**es in their hands, pronto.

🍺B**R UPDATE: NEW ARRIVALS (MOSTLY SEASONAL)

We are getting waist deep in the seasonal b**rs, even if we're still wearing our Summer garb outside in the heat.

There are three groups of b**rs listed below in the New Arrival section, all of which are up on the shelves ready for purchase at the time of this email going out.

The top set are general new b**rs to the store with no seasonal aspect to them. Second group is all the Oktoberfest Marzen or Festbier L***rs in the store right now, with ones new to the store with a 'NEW!' beside them.

OKTOBERFEST/FESTBIER

Note: We are attempting to make a distinction between an 'Oktoberfest Marzen' and a 'Festbier L***r' whenever possible.

A Marzen is the malty style that has been more famously exported for years, while the Festbier L***r is a lighter more 'basic' style L***r that has usually been just made for the festival itself but has grown more popular in recent years.
