Mountain Meadows Farm - Ivy, Virginia

Mountain Meadows Farm - Ivy, Virginia Mountain Meadows Farm is located in Ivy in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains ten miles west of Charlottesville, Va.

I have been farming in the same location since 1976, starting with a herd of purebred goats and a commercial goat cheese operation. The goats have been replaced with a small herd of purebred Jersey cows which produce rich creamy milk. Selling raw (unpasteurized) milk is not permitted in Virginia. But it is possible to purchase a share in my herd which entitles a share holder to the milk the cows p

roduce. In addition to the cows the farm includes pigs that are raised on free range pasture and enjoy the extra milk that does not go to the herd share program. The pork is available at the Farmers Markets and at a local gourmet grocery. Two driving ponies (mostly retired), assorted cats, a Border collie and a small flock of chickens complete the menagerie. I raise organic vegetables which are also available at the Farmers Markets that I attend year round. An off shoot of Mountain Meadows Farm is Mountain Meadows Bath Products, a line of milk-based soaps, lotions and milk bath that are sold wholesale and retail. More information about the bath products is available on the web page: mountainmeadowsbath.com

I am harvesting great potatoes, both Kennebec and Yukon Gold. The vines are full of Rattlesnake Beans. Delicious green beans that have brown stripes that look like a rattlesnake skin. Come and see me at the Crozet Farmer's Market tomorrow from 8-noon. The tomatoes are just beginning to ripen, they should be available in about a week.

PIGS - PIGS - PIGS!

I purchase weaned piglets when they are about eight to ten weeks old. They run free in a wooded lot eating acorns, grasses and all the tasty things pigs love to rout up. Twice a day they get lots of fresh milk left over from the herd share program, which they love and occasionally a little grain. When they are about six months old they become pork which I sell at Farmers Markets and at Foods of all Nations store in Charlottesville.

Occasionally I have whole or half pig available for sale. The advantage to buying it this way is that your costs are less and you can have the meat custom processed. But you will need the freezer space to accommodate around 100 lbs of meat.

The beef and pork are processed at T & E Meats in Harrisonburg. It is vacuum packed and frozen. The beef in available in steaks, ground and stew meat. The pork is available as pork chops and breakfast sausage. The sausage has no fillers or MSG it is made with just the pork and spices.
