🍁 What do llamas and alpacas like to do in the fall?
Pretty much what we all want to do when the weather gets cooler!

🦙 Graze: Cooler weather means comfortable days spent enjoying the pasture.

🍂 Explore: Fall brings changes to the farm—different smells, leaves, weather, and plenty of things to investigate.

😴 Rest: After a little exploring and grazing, there’s always time for a good llama or alpaca nap.

🤎 Spend time with the herd: These animals are social and naturally enjoy being around their herd mates.

And while they’re enjoying the season, we’re enjoying watching them settle into their fall routine.

🍂 Hello, Fall! 🍂

Fall has arrived at Lower Sherwood Farm!

As the temperatures cool and the leaves begin to change, our llamas and alpacas settle into one of the most beautiful times of year on the farm.

Cooler days mean more time to graze, wander the pastures, soak up the sunshine, and simply enjoy being together as a herd. 🦙🍁

And for us, fall also means fiber season—one of our favorite parts of the year!

We’re looking forward to crisp mornings, changing leaves, happy animals, and all that this new season brings.

Meet Frost & Blue

Frost is a female alpaca about 5 years old.
Blue is a male llama about 1.5 years old.

These sweet animals needed a new place to call home. We’re so grateful they found their way here, and we can’t wait to watch them settle in and thrive.

Virginia is in the middle of a serious heat wave, and our llamas and alpacas are feeling it just like we are. 🥵🦙

We’ve been thinking ahead for days like this for a while now—last year we added a splash pad as part of our heat stress plan, and today it finally got its real moment in the sun (and water 💦).

It didn’t take long for the herd to get curious, step in, and start cooling off. Simple tools like shade, extra fans, fresh water, and this splash pad make a big difference in helping animals stay safe and comfortable during extreme heat.

One thing people get wrong about llamas: they’re just like alpacas. 🦙

While they’re closely related, llamas and alpacas serve different roles. Llamas are larger, more independent, and often used as pack or guard animals — while alpacas are typically bred for their fiber.
