It only took us until 2pm to realize today is our anniversary! ❤️😅

Which feels like a good time to acknowledge that marriage — much like flower farming — comes with highs, lows, beautiful seasons, complete disasters, and a surprising amount of money spent on things you never anticipated needing. 😂

Some years you’re standing in a field of flowers thinking, Wow, look at everything we’ve built.

Other years Mother Nature dumps 8 inches of rain on you and says, Let’s see how strong this marriage really is. 🌧️💪🏻

We may be celebrating this one in a bit of a low season, but if farming has taught us anything, it’s that seasons change, you clean up the mess, you plant again, and you keep going.

So, Happy 8th Anniversary to us! 🥂❤️

Good morning, everyone! 🌸

THANK YOU. Truly. This community is nothing short of amazing.

Asking for help to rebuild and recover isn’t an easy thing to do, but you have given us the most incredible start. Our fundraiser has already raised over $3,700! I can’t begin to tell you how much that means to our family and our farm. 💗

A huge thank you to Anthony Krolikowski for reaching out, visiting the farm, listening to our story, and sharing it with our community on CBS6Albany news this weekend. Having the opportunity to show what happened here—and what this loss means for a small flower farm—meant so much.

And this storm didn’t stop at our property line. Another local flower farmer, Adele Bueno in North Chatham, also suffered a devastating loss of her dahlia crop. She is an amazing person and flower farmer, and as we begin replacing our own dahlia collection, we will be helping her replace hers, too. 🌸

Farming is hard enough without disasters. We’ve been knocked down a bit, but we’re certainly not done.

Thank you for all the support, shares, messages, offer of tubers, kind words and encouragement. You are giving us an incredible head start on rebuilding what was lost.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you. 💗

First, I want to say THANK YOU. 💕

The number of messages, kind words, and incredibly generous offers to share dahlia tubers with us has been overwhelming in the very best way. I’m creating a follow-up list so I can reconnect with everyone later this fall and over the winter as we begin figuring out what rebuilding our dahlia collection will look like.

Many of you have also reached out asking how you can help or contribute in other ways. One of our wonderful patrons and dear friends generously created a GoFundMe to help ease some of the financial impact of this loss.

The effects of losing our dahlia crop extend beyond this season. We’ve lost a significant portion of the income we expected from flowers and events this fall, as well as the tuber inventory that would have supported our annual tuber sale next spring.

There is absolutely no expectation to contribute. Your messages, encouragement, offers of tubers, sharing our story, and continued support of our little farm already mean more than I can say. But for those who have specifically asked if there is a way to donate or help make the road ahead a little easier, I’ll share the GoFundMe link below.

We have some rebuilding to do, but we’re looking forward to growing again. 🌱💕

Thank you for standing behind Guiding Green Thumbs and cheering us through this. It truly means the world to us.

A difficult farm update. ❤️

For the month of August, we have made the decision to close the farmstand while we take some time to regroup, clean up, and determine our path forward after the extraordinary storm that brought more than 8 inches of rain to our area.

Unfortunately, one of our greatest losses has only become clear recently: our dahlias.

This season, we planted approximately 2,000 dahlias—more than 200 varieties—for cut flowers, future tuber stock, and the growing farm experience we had hoped to share with you this fall.
After sitting in severely saturated soil following the storm, the tubers began to rot. Despite our efforts to save them, we have lost the majority of the crop.
This is a significant loss for our small farm. Dahlias have become an increasingly important part of our financial sustainability—not only through the flowers we harvest, but through the tubers we carefully dig, divide, store, and sell each spring.
There is a lot to process, a lot to clean up, and some difficult decisions to make about what comes next.

So, for August, we’re giving ourselves the space to do exactly that.

But we’re not done. 🌿

We plan to reopen this fall with classes and workshops, Halloween activities, and holiday events. We’ll be sharing our calendar for the remainder of the year soon.
I’ve also shared a video on YouTube showing the storm damage, the dahlia fields, and more about what this loss means for our farm. The full video has just been uploaded on our YouTube channel.

Thank you for supporting this little farm through the beautiful seasons—and the really hard ones. ❤️
With much gratitude,
Shelley & Bryan

Well, I think I should focus and share some parts of the farm and my home gardens that actually appreciated all 8.5 inches of rain. Here are a few favorites from today (and a drone shot of our back fields which are thriving since the rain!)

A Quick Update: There have been moments of feeling completely overwhelmed, but I’ve also been reminded to look at how far we’ve come since 2023. Not all is lost. More work and cleanup than devastation. That’s the good news. Thank you for all the love, encouragement and advice! I’m reading them all. ❤️

As we continue cleaning up the gardens around the barns and decide whether it’s worth replanting our fall crops, we’re hoping the dahlias recover after spending far too much time underwater, and that fall rewards us with a spectacular season of blooms.💕🌸

I don’t cry often but damn today has been hard.

And not just for me, but for so many in our local community. This is a look at my farm damage Mother Nature has done after dropping 8.3” of rain (so far!) on us in the last 24 hours.

It’s hard not to feel defeated when you’ve poured your heart, your time, and your soul into building something that can be changed overnight. The rain that has fallen has turned our fields into rivers and washing away years of work in places. Some things can be replanted. Some things can’t. And cleanup…. I can’t even estimate how much gravel and rock we have to remove off our landscape. And all you can do is watch it happen, accept what you can’t control, and figure out where to begin again.

They say farming teaches resilience. But resilience doesn’t mean you don’t grieve. Tomorrow, we’ll assess all the damage and start digging out, replanting, rebuilding.

And to our fellow flower farmers, local businesses and neighbors facing flooded buildings, washed-out roads, damaged homes, and heartbreaking losses… we’re right there with you. We see you, we feel you.

Brighter days are ahead. I hope.

Please show your local farmers and businesses some grace. This life is not for the faint of heart. 💚
