We may be in the middle of an ice storm and there may still be feet of snow everywhere and the temperatures might still be cold at night but the greenhouse is oblivious to all that nonsense. The cool season flowers are coming alive again and hot damn feels like spring! Campanula, Feverfew, Dianthus, Delphinium, Snapdragon, Stock, Ranunculus, Anemone, Bells of Ireland, Poppy and Foxglove are all coming up. This winter persists but so do we and so do our flowers.

Happy first day of spring! We are freshly dug out from a once in a century snow storm that dropped 4 FEET! of snow on us. You know what else dropped today? Tomato seeds. 🍅 🌱 🌞 Our greenhouse will be open for plant sales in May and you can put them in your gardens when the snow melts away in August (JK, I hope).

February 10th is the official beginning of our next season of flowers. Seeding begins in earnest with perennials and and biennials that require a long cool germination time. We transplant our ranunculus and anemones along with snapdragons and stock into the greenhouses. Overwintered flowers planted last year in October start to put on new growth. Tulip forcing begins. February starts slow but by the end of month it’s full steam ahead to fields of flowers.
Being so far north and still buried under literal feet of snow, this is a hard time for the farmers up here in the UP to watch all the growers in lower Michigan and Wisconsin start their seasons. I personally always feel behind on my farm during this part of the year but magically we catch up to everyone else and we will be in our fields in no time. Until then, despite the snow, I will tend to my seedlings. 🌱
