💔 In Memory of Saki 💔
Today Moonfeather Homestead lost one of our original girls, and this one hurts more than I can put into words.
When we first moved here, I told Kiddo, “No fancy chickens. I just want normal chickens.” Of course, she didn't listen. 😂 she picked out Saki, our crazy little Polish girl, and somehow that one fancy chicken became one of the most special chickens I've ever had.
Saki was almost 10 years old. Over the years she had been sick more than once, and every time I nursed her and somehow she bounced back. As she got older and her eyesight started failing, I knew eventually I would have to say goodbye. I just always hoped she would simply pass peacefully from old age after living such a long, spoiled life. Unfortunately, that wasn't how we lost her.
I'm heartbroken. She wasn't “just a chicken.” She was part of the beginning of all of this. She was here through years of changes, animals coming and going, good times and terrible ones. She was one of my OG girls.
Looking back at this picture from March 20, 2019, I can't help but smile through the tears. Kiddo was told no fancy chickens—and apparently she knew better than I did. ❤️
Almost ten years is an incredible life for a chicken, and I'm grateful I got to love that ridiculous little feather-headed girl for as long as I did.
Fly high, Saki. 🌈🐔
You were loved for a very, very long time, and you will never be forgotten.
The one fancy chicken I never wanted became one I never wanted to lose. 💔

The chickens got a nice little upgrade today thanks to the hubs! ❤️🐔
We spent the evening installing misting systems, and now every run (except one that's tucked behind the other coops in deep shade) has its own mister to help keep everyone cool during this heat wave.
Between the shade, fresh water, and now the misters, our feathered crew should be much more comfortable on these scorching days. 💦

An added bonus is that we now have water run to each coop, which means automatic waterers are a project we can tackle in the future. One step at a time, but it's exciting to keep making improvements for the flock! 💦☀️

A huge thank you to the hubs for all the hard work! ❤️

This heat wave is no joke! 🥵
We decided our chickens needed a little extra comfort, so they officially inherited one of our old pool umbrellas for some much-needed shade. ☂️🐓
I also made a Food Lion run and picked up watermelon and cantaloupe to help keep everyone cool, hydrated, and happy during these scorching temperatures. 🍉🍈
Between extra shade, fresh water, cooling treats, and lots of check-ins throughout the day, we're doing everything we can to help our animals beat the heat.
Stay cool out there, everyone! ☀️💙
