Most farmers don't decide to leave their farms lightly—but sometimes it's the only economic choice that makes sense.

The local foods movement has become much more than a short-lived dietary or environmental trend. In Appalachia, it may help fuel a new economy.

Harvest Roots Farm and Ferment started three years ago with $800, and now sells its ginger beer and kombucha at farmers markets and the J. Clyde. Now the company is ready to launch a Kickstarter fundraising campaign. If successful, that $12,000 or so will allow the couple to double the business' sca…

Members enjoyed an inspiring and informative presentation by Lindsay Whiteaker and Pete Halupka of Harvest Roots Farm & Ferment on September 5th. Lindsey and Pete are new to the area having recently relocated their farm and business from Falkville to Mentone, Alabama. They are excited to be here and looking forward to meeting local farmers as well as the local food community. Many thanks to them for sharing their time and knowledge!

Just a bit more about them in their own words...

"Lindsay Whiteaker is a co-owner of Alabama’s first fermentation company and she has been an avid fermenter for six years. In the fall of 2014, Lindsay was able to study under Sandor Katz, Fermentation Revivalist and author of Art of Fermentation and Wild Fermentation.

Pete Halupka is also a co-owner of Harvest Roots Farm & Ferment. He has been fermenting and farming for three years. His specialization in Northern Alabama foraging as well as the cultural history and active cultivation of resilient, Southern heirloom fruits intersect beautifully in a crock with honey, sugar, or a SCOBY.

Harvest Roots recently relocated to Mentone, Alabama. As growers ourselves, we are super excited for this opportunity to introduce ourselves to the Chattanooga scene of organic growers, makers and thinkers. We have been in markets in Birmingham and Huntsville for two years. We specialize in foraged, wild kombuchas, ginger beer, beet kvass, as well as numerous recipes of vegetable ferments, generally reacting to local abundance."

Many thanks to Joel Houser, Southeast Conservation Director for The Land Trust for Tennessee for the entertaining and informative presentation our members enjoyed August 29th. Through his knowledge and experience he helped us all to better understand the importance of conservation easements to preserving farmland, and other appropriate properties, in perpetuity.

We all enjoyed and benefited from his presentation as well as from the opportunity for community and sharing in a potluck. Meindert Dijkhuis from Dry Creek Farm served an heirloom watermelon he grew called a Bradford, it was huge, sweet, and delicious, weighing in at 34 pounds! Of course, we all wanted to save our seeds....
