I absolutely LOVE seeing Dark Horse (and Driftwood Pottery) products show up in the most unique places! My new wonderful customers Eric and Meghann bought a lavender refrigerator magnet last week and lookey there! As promised, shows up in his 70 Ford pick up. 🥰

I am so yearning for lavender season, I must say - the heady fragrance, the warm air, the markets. And I would be crazy to say that I look forward to the dormant season with the chilling temperatures, the sleet, snow, and mud, and the voice in the back of my mind telling me I have so much to do to prepare for the next year.

What do I look forward to in the bleak midwinter? Traveling across the broad Pacific to Australia to see the boy, his bride, and my sweet grandbabes. It is bittersweet that my son and family live in Melbourne, and that - other than Nana Fridays on Facetime - I see them twice a year, yet it’s pretty special when I hear Tatum say “I cahn’t” or “Nahna” with that awesome Australian twang. And heart-wrenching when standing at the ticket counter when leaving and hearing Tomas wail in the sweetest, saddest tiny 2-year-old voice…. “Nannnnaaaaaaaa”. But in the grand scheme of things, it is truly a blessing that my life now allows for vacations without demands or stress - no business emails, no employee emergencies that need immediate attention, no CEOs demanding I get on a call at 3 am. Yes, I’m coming home with a nasty cold and orders to fill, but my heart is full to the brim, and this will carry me over until the fall and once again board the 15-hour flight back to Australia.

Pretty cool though, we did get to experience the Australian Open. Even though my favorite was knocked out in the semi-final, it was incredible. Thank you, Grey Goose, for making the Aussie heat bearable, to my son and his wife for being the most incredible hosts, and to my amazing (as always) travel buddy and business partner.

Now back to business!

Our first market season is coming to a close, and what a wild ride it has been. First and foremost, to my daughter Maddie. You created the essence of Dark Horse, your design, your ideas - all brilliant and spot on. Thank you for talking me out of purple. Thank you for helping me with the CDA Street Fair - and the night swim in the lake after a looonnng two days. But mostly thank you for being my sweetpea - the best daughter a mama could ask for. Love you to the moon and back and back to the moon and back again….

I want to give a HUGE shout out to Maggie Smith and Yvette Bendickson, my go tos for guidance on how to work successful shows. As many locals know, Maggie is the owner of Fleur de Provence Lavender - and to know Maggie is to love her. Heart of gold, taught me so much about how to build on this crazy dream of growing the “fleur de provence”. Yvette is the owner and artist behind Driftwood Pottery (driftwoodpotterypnw.com) who has saved my bacon, and sanity, on more than one occasion. I’m so glad we found each other again after all those years at KXLY.

To my neighbor vendors - Joe and Carolyn from Renegade Farm () what am I going to do without your amazing spinach! Riley (escnorthwest.com) it’s going to be sad not having you next to me, sharing stories and basking in the cold evening light - ALWAYS being the last two to pack up. 🙂 Learned alot from you doll. Heather at Family Fungi - you are the kindest soul, always helping the overstocked to break down, always waiting to make sure we’re safe, and crocheting the best beanies a frigid bod could ask for. Larry from Living Soil - I couldn’t have asked for a better next door neighbor in “little Amsterdam”. I hope you kill it in the AI space, remember me when the machines take over. Sara at Browning Beef (browningbeef.com) it was a filthy blast working the Market in the Mountains with you. Are you still washing dirt out of every nook, cranny and or***ce? Gateway Greens family (https://www.instagram.com/gateway_greens_/) - thanks for the laughs and turning me on to Gozzer. I’m not going to make it without your sunflower! And last with all my heart - Laura from Wildland Cooperative (wildland.coop). You were my personal savior in the heat of the summer. May God bless you for making sure I didn’t die on the hottest of hot days.

But truly my heart is with all my simply AMAZING customers who I got to know and and love Dark Horse, and helped me have a most incredible first season. Your compliments, your repeat business, your ideas and requests, and mostly just your company made what could have been a most grueling day worth every minute. I loved hearing your stories and sharing my lavender journey. You inspire me to create the products you love, to make your home and health safer, better and much more fragrant! Thank you.

Now onto moving product into stores. Kyle and Mitchell at Spokane Olive Oil (spokaneoliveoil.com), your products are truly a kiss from the heavens, and for anyone looking to have their mind blown by the vast selection of oils and vinegars, don’t miss this place in Kendall Yards. I’ll have my products there, but that’s not why you should go. What a perfect spot for outfitting your kitchen, expanding your knowledge or just hanging with two of coolest guys I’ve met in the business. I’m hoping to get into 10 more stores before years end, so I’ll keep those of you that are panicking that the market season is over - in the know.

Now it’s time to finish thrashing buds (yep, still at it), put the babes to bed and get the equipment ready for next year. I should have a beautiful new lavender workshop next spring, so PLEASE don’t hesitate to visit.

Have a peaceful autumnal equinox and a magical holiday season!

Peace to you all!

Sherrie

PS - how could I leave out the one who made it all possible, my sweet and patient husband Sam. Thank you for being my driver, my best critic, my emotional support dude, unbelievable workhorse and best friend. Love you more…..
