Our Story
Chebeague Island Oyster Company began in 2013 as a way to grow several things: local food, small business, a few jobs on Chebeague... We started as a community demonstration project to help build small family-run business based on the island and Casco Bay. We became a business in 2015.
Cold water, suspended culture techniques (oysters in trays on bottom in the intertidal zone) and careful farming (tumbling to increase shell strength, reduce biofouling, and improve shell shape) result in oysters with great flavor that shuck well. We hope that our work helps others get started in sustainable aquaculture as well.
