Instead of posting bakery hours for December, I have a much more important update to share with you…
For Christmas this year, I’m giving myself the gift of retirement.
It’s hard to believe, but it’s been 26 years since Brian’s diagnosis — 26 years of learning, advocating, teaching, experimenting, and living inside the gluten-free world pretty much every single day.
I’m grateful to say that Brian is strong, healthy and thriving – and that has always been the heart behind this bakery.
I baked from my home kitchen for years. I met some of you in parking lots, like it was a covert gluten-free deal. I also sat in the corner of the Pizza Plant bar-room on wheat free Wednesdays with a cooler of buns – hoping to sell a few (thank you Pizza Plant!), delivered to health-food shops and restaurants, and showed up at gluten-free diet support group meetings with bags of buns.
From the very beginning, I tried to make everything as clean as possible – real ingredients, nothing artificial and nothing processed. I knew how sensitive our community was and always wanted the things you brought home from my bakery to feel safe, nourishing and trustworthy.
I never set out to make a career out of this. I just wanted to help people who were as lost as I once was.
Of all the years I’ve baked for you — 9 of those were inside my little bakery. I’ve watched your kids grow up, I’ve gotten to know your families, I’ve celebrated your successes and tried my best to make your diets feel a little less stressful and a lot more joyful.
Some of my favorite memories include the evenings before COVID when we invited groups of wonderful disabled adults to learn how to bake. The music and laughter that filled the room reminded me of what joy truly looks like. I also had the privilege of welcoming disabled high school and college students as interns over the years. Their enthusiasm and work ethic brought an energy and spirit into the bakery that I loved.
This work has been my heart for a long time… but it’s time for me to go enjoy the pieces of life I’ve put off. So, I’m closing the bakery and stepping into retirement with gratitude, relief, and a deep sense of completion.
Thank you for the trust, the support, the friendship, and the loyalty. Thank you for letting me be a part of your lives, your kitchens and your celebrations. Thank you for supporting this little bakery with so much heart.
It’s truly been an honor.
Tina (Brian’s mom)
