Coal Creek Tree Farm

Coal Creek Tree Farm Coal Creek Tree Farm is certified through the Washington State Stewardship Forest and the American Tree Farm System (ATFS).

The property is 468 acres of mixed forest, containing mostly Douglas Fir and Cedar as the crop trees. In the late 1800's the land was acquired as a coal mine. The coal was used at a local gas purification plant, a power plant for local heat use, and by the rail road. It is believed that mining stopped in the 1940's. The old growth forest was logged off and most likely not replanted. After WWII and

until the early 1960's, the property hosted an AMA sanctioned motorcycle hill climb. In the late 1980's, the Thompson family, the owners since 1953, logged the mixed species tree farm and replanted in Douglas Fir. Since the Madsen family acquisition in 2010; the coal mines have been repaired and covered up, roads and trails have been improved, a bridge has been added over Coal Creek, Reprod has been thinned, and a Rehab area has been developed. The Madsen's family goal is to be good land stewards and provide healthy animal habitat. By taking an agricultural approach, they hope to grow a healthy crop of marketable trees.
