With the hurt and loss from my turkeys last week, the sun is shining on the hill today ☀️A welcome surprise came with a phone call today in the form of a bum calf from a local cattle farm. This has been a long time dream and goal for me and we happily welcomed this little guy home 💕

Rough week. We’ve lived the truth of if you have LIVEstock, eventually you will have DEADstock. The only non-electric pen was hit by a very large predator(s) this week that took our sweet meat turkey, Gravy, a blue slate hen named Muffin and killed our blue slate tom, Silverback, and the youngest hen, MiniMuffin. RIP friends, I look forward to eliminating whatever took you 😭

Pleasantly surprised ☺️ when we bought Ivy Hill, the majority of the property was vastly overgrown and yes, covered in poison ivy. Dr Tyler bush hogged the entire woods and we had a clean slate to rotationally graze our pigs, chickens and now, goats.

Fast forward to this past week and while fungi foraging, I have found a huge, towering American black elderberry tree. 12-15’ tall and covered in flower clusters. I might note I have obliterated every elderberry plant that has been purchased for this homestead in 4 years so I am THRILLED. And here is a massive, native medicinal berry shrub 150’ from the house. So many good things are waiting in our woods.

It has been an absurdly wet spring 🌧️ It has rained +34” 😳 in 2025 alone. We’re a solid 9” above the average rainfall for the year. It’s made for a muddy mess around here, but the upside… mushrooms! Lots of mushrooms. Today I collected half a pound of Chanterelles from the woods. The kids have a blast identifying all of the weird and unique mushrooms we have here

A rainy day means LOTS of eggs to be washed. 18 dozen eggs. Can you see why I prefer dry days and the magic of the egg bloom being intact?! Fresh, unwashed eggs will last almost the same amount of time in a temperature controlled room as washed eggs stored in the refrigerator. But once washed, eggs must be stored in a refrigerator to prevent spoilage as the cuticle of the egg is no longer in tact. The more you know 🌈
