āļøThis is for the new breeders or anyone that has questions about horn production āļø
For anyone that is thinking about culling heifers because of horn, this is for you. So Im like a lot of people raising this breed: we love raising these cows for all their attributes that make them special. Horn is obviously up there (itās in the name).
Weāve only been in this since ā22 and we always knew for us to make leaps with our herd we would have to do it within by raising outstanding heifers. I try to evaluate for everything that makes a great cow, and I include horn production in that because if I ignored that aspect I need to go back to limousines.
If youāre still reading, SD Gin and Run (pictured below) was a heifer I initially considered moving on from. Started off solid red and average on horn (28ā @ 1). But because she was part of our first calf crop from PCC Front Runner, we wanted to keep as many heifers as possible for data collection.
Fast forward to today, not only has her color change been fun to watch, but she has really kicked it in on her TTT. She added 32ā to achieve 60ā TTT @ 2, and now I measured her today just 3 days past the 2.5 year mark and she added another 10+ inches and is now 70.5ā TTT. With her momentum (Iāve measured her multiple times in between, so I believe sheās just now hitting her stride) I donāt see why she canāt be 80ā TTT @ 3 and so on.
So if you have a heifer that is starting off a little slow or just average, donāt give up on them. Sometimes they donāt hit their peak right away. Weāre trying so hard to get all these cows to make certain standards so early, we forget some just need more time to reach stardom.
