These animals forage for a living and are not raised in a confinement operation/feed lot. At Iowa Kiko Goats we strive to produce the best quality meat goats in the industry. We believe in adaptability, forage diversity, and productivity. Kiko goats are a performance breed and we recognize that trait above all else. Kikos are renowned for their mothering instinct, parasite resistance, and rapid

growth rate. When you buy Iowa Kiko Goats, you are buying from a herd that has been selectively bred to provide the most efficient, productive goats on the market. Our does are scored throughout the year in different categories:

1. Mothering instinct/kid performance- We require our adult does to produce their weight in kids at weaning and have twins or better. A 100 pound doe must wean two 50 pound kids. A 120 pound doe must produce three 40 pound kids etc. There have been a number of our does raise 5 kids in a given season.

2. Parasite resistance- our herd does not receive chemical dewormer. If a doe needs dewormed, she is culled. We have culled our herd by half multiple years in a row in the beginning leaving only the best of the best to reproduce. By culling hard every year we insure that our herd continues to break its own records.

3. Growth rate/meat production performance- our meat kids grade a #1 at market. They weigh between 40-70 pounds at 3 months and 80-120 pounds in 5-6 months. We sold wethers over 100 pounds for over $500 this past season.

4. Browsing performance- (Ex:standing on two legs in order to reach the top branches vs lying down and eating off the parasite rich ground) we have been taking our herd on jobs across the state to clear invasive species for nearly a decade. They learn to eat quickly and competitively with our high stocking rates and rotational grazing. We have yet to find a plant they won’t eat or make them sick. By selectively breeding and culling for these traits, we can supply producers around the country with exactly what they need to run a profitable operation. By starting with high quality animals you save time/money on equipment, meds, and feed which puts more money in your pocket at the end of the year. Labor is most farmers #1 expense and with these high production, high performance genetics we keep labor costs to a minimum.

Notice how we work the animals. Slow, quiet, careful movements. Gentle catches. Low stress. No loud noises, slamming equipment, engines/machines, dogs, lasso/ropes. We put our hands on every animal to do a general health check and treat any wounds if necessary. The catcher say the eartag number clearly and the recorder repeats the number to prevent any mistakes. The kids are involved but not excessively chasing the animals. They are learning our roles in case any of them decide they want to be more involved down the road. Everyone has a job and we rotate as needed so everyone gets experience at every level if they so choose.
