Raised here, harvested here, healing soils here. This year we harvest more animals for Beef Share customers than ever before, and there are so many reasons this feels so aligned.
4 years ago when it became clear the future of water insecurity in Jefferson County would make our future as organic wholesale veggie growers not viable, we got to work to quickly pivot the farm business to survive. All the infrastructure built to do veg at scale, we had to park in the barn. Grief and fear, would the farm business survive?
For a while during the shutdowns in 2020 it seemed that shipping meats would be the answer to scale the meat business to the point where it could replace our income from veggie sales, so we ran hard that direction and created out of nothing an e-commerce site, got an industrial freezer, scaled up our USDA slaughter dates and started shipping meats. Crazy when I look back on all it took and all we did.
If possible, we want the food we grow to stay here. We want the nutrient cycle which begins with the microbes in the soil and extends to the microbes in your belly to stay here, to cycle back into this land, to close the loop.
Meat Shares are the ultimate love letter of commitment to place and the ultimate closing of the loop. When we sell meat this way, animals can be harvested here on the farm. The guts can be placed in the back of the property for the coyotes and the eagles and the bugs. Blood spills from animals back to soil. Life ends where it began. Our relationship to our community that we feed is one in which we will feed you for most of the year, we will fill your freezer. Shares customers are perennial, returning to us year after year just like we show up for you, year after year. Shares allow us to plan for the next 3 years, knowing how many mother cows we can support here.
We still ship but it feels like our future can support growth in the direction of shares, while keeps us closer to this community here, closing the loop, and providing meats at the most economical price possible.
We are now planning not just for 2026, but 2027 & 2028 because feeding you in 3 years begins today.
