🌱 RAMP SEASON IS HERE 🌱

Ramps—also known as wild leeks—are one of the first signs that spring has truly arrived. They’re a wild-growing plant (Allium tricoccum) found in wooded areas, sought after by foragers. They have a bold flavor—think garlic + onion with a little extra punch. You’ll recognize them by their broad green leaves, reddish/purple stems, & small white bulbs.

They only stick around for a few short weeks each spring, which makes them a seasonal favorite around here.

So what have we been making with them?
🥓 Ramp, bacon, & cheddar sourdough
🍞 Ramp, garlic, & parmesan sourdough
🧈 Ramp compound butter
🥚 Ramp deviled eggs
🥔 Potato, bacon, & ramp soup
🥣 Creamy ramp dip

Safe to say we’re making the most of every last bite while they’re here. 😅

Our chickens are raised with care right here on our homestead, and we take pride in offering healthy chicks and high-quality eggs to our community.

BLOOMY! 🥚

Did you know fresh eggs come with their own natural protective coating called “bloom”?

Bloom is a thin layer secreted by a hen, made up mostly of proteins, that is left on an egg when it’s laid. It seals the shell’s tiny pores and helps keep dirt & bacteria out. That’s why fresh, unwashed eggs can stay good on the counter for quite a while.

Some eggs have a heavier, more opaque bloom than others. This results in uniquely beautiful egg colors. Olive, green, & blue eggs may appear dusty gray. Whereas brown eggs can vary from pastel pink to smokey purple, depending on the shade of brown underneath.

I love seeing the different variations of blooms from our girls—it’s always a fun surprise!

We hope everyone had a wonderful and blessed Easter!

Spring is the time of year when life is breathed back into the world. After a long winter, plants and animals are made new. Seeds begin to sprout, flowers bloom, fresh eggs fill the nesting boxes, and new life is all around. Spring whispers the same promise God has written into every season:

After sorrow comes joy. After waiting comes new life. After the cross came the empty tomb.

The last few days are proof that even after the darkest days, hope still rises. Just as He has risen. May this Easter season remind us that no matter how long the winter or how dark the night, there is always hope waiting to bloom.

We had a fantastic hatch rate — 52 out of 55 eggs successfully hatched! They were hatched right here on our homestead between 4/1 - 4/3 and are ready to go! These sweet little fluff balls come from a colorful, fun mix of some of our favorite breeds, which means you can expect a beautiful variety of feather colors, patterns, and egg colors as they grow.
