It's high time I revisit a favorite...
Full disclosure: I am a recovering Japanese food snob who still judges everything. I lived in Japan for six years, which means two things:
1. I ate very well
2. I am now insufferable about quality and authentic Japanese food
So when I tell you Rayaki is legit, please understand this compliment was hard-earned.
Let’s talk ramen...
The black garlic ramen is bold, rich, and aggressively comforting... like it wants to tuck you into bed and tell you everything will be okay. Deep umami, zero weird aftertaste, no “why does this taste like dishwater?” moments that other places sometimes fall victim to...
The miso ramen (pictured) - Cozy. Balanced. The kind of bowl that makes you pause mid-slurp and nod quietly to yourself like, “Yes. This is correct.”
They have a ton of robayaki skewers on the menu - my absolute favorite are the pork scallion skewers, which are simple in theory but dangerous in ex*****on because suddenly you’re mad there aren’t 12 of them. Perfectly cooked, juicy, sticky and seasoned exactly how they should be...no nonsense, no gimmicks, no regrets.
The Japanese curry plates are elite comfort food. Thick, fragrant, slightly sweet, deeply savory with nothing extra thrown in... the kind of curry that makes you forget whatever bad day you were having and consider ordering another plate “for later” (it will not make it home).
Also worth mentioning: their drinks are actually good, not just “legally a beverage.” Everything pairs well with the food, which tells me someone here actually cares.
Bonus points: their Glassboro location has mostly the same but some different menu items as well, which I respect immensely. Nothing screams confidence like “we didn’t just copy-paste.”
Final verdict from a former Japan resident with trust issues:
Rayaki passes my scrutiny. It’s authentic, flavorful, and doesn’t try to reinvent Japanese food for Instagram clout. If you like ramen, curry, or happiness in general, you need to go. And if you don’t like it, that’s fine, but I will silently judge you. 🍜
