Set backs are part of life. When you relocate from another state, and not only create a homestead, but also the infrastructure to make it viable, things happen. We've been so very blessed to have the support of great friends. Recently, we were lucky we didn't wind up in the wall of the tunnel or rolling the truck and causing a pile-up on I-40. Obviously we were very blessed in that moment. Is this heartbreaking that the truck we were driving belongs to one of our best friends? Absolutely. We made it home, thanks to another best friend who drove over 2 hours in the rain one way to load up the truck and us. What do you do when your buddy's truck gets trashed? Parts have been ordered, a great mechanic is going to work us in his schedule, we make it right, like it never happened. Our running joke on the Homestead every time there's a set back, "Before indoor plumbing, people pooped in the woods" so looks like no indoor plumbing for a few months more. We finally had momentum, and were making real progress. Well, this is only an obstacle to overcome. Everything we want is on the other side of this delay. No one was injured, and the truck is repairable. I'll be in the woods for a bit, if anybody needs me.

What do you do when you buy so far out in the country, that there's no electric near by? You contact the co-op and find out the contractor for the power company wants over $40k to bring you a 220v line. Solar it is. All solar, everything. Life off the grid. So now I'm an amateur expert on solar systems. It doesn't have to cost a fortune, and you don't have to call a high priced company to do your install. It was pretty cool, we we're kicked back watching TV thru the Starlink (no cable or TV stations out there either), sipping cold beverages, when we realized we're in our pasture in the middle of nowhere Kentucky. We are completely self sustaining. We've built in redundancy, we have a generator, and a couple different sources and methods for heat. We have water covered. We're still learning. The Homestead life is work, period, but it does represent a kind of freedom that so many of us forgot existed. At the end of the day, if we were successful it was because of our efforts, or the combined efforts with others offering a helping hand.

Oh, there is an indigenous critter on the farm. The Blue Crayfish is a species known to Kentucky. They're burrowing instead of water dwelling. This guy walked up to my shoe, and was happy to be handled because it was cold outside. I saw the burrow he was headed to, so we went inside to warm up, get some water and some vegetable scraps. We headed back out, I set him near the tunnel entrance, and he scurried in. My wife told me that he couldn't move in with us. I did find the old aquarium in storage, just incase he comes back around.
